To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Jol-IN REID, a subject of the King ot Great Britain and reland, residing at London, in the county of London, England, (whose pest-otiice address is 3 Pump Court, rlemple, London, Englanch) have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Collar-Boxes and the Like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in collar boxes and the like and has for its object to provide a collar box of simple construction capable of accommodating maximum number of collars (tor example, a dozen collars) in a minimum space while at the same time etliciently preventing damage to the collars. A tie or ties may be also placed in the box together with the collars, the box with its contents taking up a very small space (as compared with collar boxes heretofore used) in a kit or other traveling bag or receptacle.

The invention consists principally in a flexible, or collapsible box which may be constructed of leather or other material, and the box according to this inventionV-instead of being circular in torm,-is oblong, the box being made more or less in the shape ot' a slipper or of a wedge, and the top and bottom ot' this box are made ot a suitable thin or flexible material so that by means ot' a strap or other suitable fastening device the box can be compressed or collapsed, the box being such that it can be compressed without injury to the linen or fabric ot the collars and without spoiling their shape for wear.

The accompanying drawing illustrates the invention, this drawing showing the term ot construction of thecollar box which is considered preferable.

Figure l is a perspective view et the box constructed in accordance with this invention, the box being shown open and with collars packed therein. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the box closed and compressed or collapsed laterally ready for packing in a kit or other traveling bag. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the box showing clearly the lid or cover of flexible material. Fig. ft is a plan view of the bottom of the box showing clearly the soft or flexible material of which the bottom of the box is formed.

The box is preferably constructed of leather, although it might be, it desired, constructed of some other suitable material or materials.

The body l ot the box, comprising its sides, is according to the construction illustrated made of a single piece of stiff or comparatively thick leather cut to the requiree size and shape and bent into the form ot the box as shown in Fig. l the ends of this piece of leather, which are brought together so as to form a vertical joint atthe wide end 2 of the box, being sewn or otherwise suitably secured together.

To the lower edge or edges of the body 1 ot the box there issecured, by sewing or otherwise, a piece oi comparatively thin, sott and flexible leather' 3 which forms the bottom of the box this piece of sott leather being eut to suit the extended shape ot' the box when packed with collars and open as shown in Fig. l. The side or vertical rim i ot' the lid of the box is also, according to the Construction shown formed ot a single piece of stiff or comparatively thick leather Cut to the required size and shape, the ends of this piece ot leather being brought together, so as to form a vertical joint at the wide end 2 of the box, and sewn or otherwise suitably connected together; to the top edge or edges ot the part or rim i of the lid there is sewn or otherwise suitably secured a piecek of comparatively thin, soft and liexible leather 5, the width of which is preferably, but not necessarily, slightly less than the width of the piece of tlexible leather B that forms the bottom ot the box. By making the piece 5 slightly smaller, as above described, than the bottom 3 of the box the vertical rim a ot the lid will to some extent grip the sides or body l of the box when the lid is applied so as to close the box. The lid consisting of the parts '-,t and 5 is preferably connected to the body l of the box by means of a hinge or tab G of leather which may be sewn to the body l of the box and to the vertical rim or side 4 of the lid at the wider or larger end of the box.

7 is a strap adapted to encircle the box as shown at or about the middle of its length or at its narrow part; this strap is preferably secured to the body l of the box Ltor instance in the known manner by sewing the strap to the body of the box.

Instead of the ends of the leather forming the body 1 of the box being connected together as hereinbefore described, the leather might be continuous at the wide end of the box and the vertical oint might be made at the narrow end of the box and in this case the ends of the leather forming the body l might if desired be sewn to the edges of a vertically arranged strip or tongue ot' soft or thin leather which might be a part of the flexible leather 3 forming the bottom of the box. Similarly the vertical joint of the ends of the leather forming the sides or rim et of the lid might be made at the narrow end of the box and these ends might also be connected to a narrow strip or tongue of thin flexible leather which might be a part of the flexible leather 5 forming the main portion of the lid.

A stiffening strip or strips oit leather or other suitable material might if desired be inserted in or applied to the body 1 of the box at its larger or wide end.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A collar box comprising an oblong body part having a rounded enlarged portion at one end and tapering to a pointed portion at its opposite end, said body part having its encircling wall of relatively stift material and a bottom of relatively flexible material, a cover of the saine shape as the body part, and consisting ot a cover piece of relatively flexible material and a rim of relatively stiff material, and an adjustable fastening device arranged to encircle both the body, and its cover, and comprising means for placing said body and cover under compression.
