Description

A. M. STOLTEY.
EXPANDED Woon LAMINA.
Patented N0v.'1, 1910.
rmnm-. ...JEM
UNITED STATES IngTENT oEEIoE.
ALBERT M. STOLTEY, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
ExPANDED-woon LAMINA.
Specilcation of Letters Patent.
Application led October 18, 1909.
a laminated body, made up of a plurality.
of sheets of wood veneer each sheetbeing provided with a series of parallel extending weakening grooves running len hwise of the grain, the sheets then being engt-hened to tear the same apart within the grooves to provide a wooden openwork, the ungrooved portions being held together by the interveningwood fibers, two or more such torn and lengthened sheets being securely united so that the grain of one 4sheet will run crosswise to that of the other.
A further object of my invention is. to
provide a laminated body, made up of a plurality of sheets having a flat' and a grooved surface the sheets being lengthened to tear the same apart within the grooves, two or more such lengthened sheets being Securely united with their flat surfaces in juxtaposition. v A still further object is to provide a laminated body comprising a sheet of wood veneer provided with a series of parallel extending weakening grooves running approximately len thwise of the grain, the sheet being lengt ened and torn asunder to provide a wooden openwork,-the sheet then being backed with a suitable paper fabric or other covering.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a new article of manufacture including two sheets of wood veneer each liav, ing a flat and a grooved surface, said sheets being lengthened and torn to' provlde a Wooden openwork said sheets belng securely united wlth their grains runnin at right an les and facing this lamina with a suitabi paper, fabric or other coverings.
Vith the above and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arran ement of parts as will be hereinafter more ully described and ticularly pointed out in the appended clalms,
Patented Nov. 1, 1210. SerialNo. 523,171.
it being understood that changes in the specic structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims witho ut departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawin s forming a part of this specification, an in which like numerals of reference indicatel similar parts in. the several views, Figure 1 shows an enlarged end view of a sheet of grooved wood veneer as used in my invention previous to lengthening the same. Fig. 2 shows a fragmentary portion of a lengthened sheet in top view isclosing the location of the unbroken st-ay portions of the treated veneer sheet. Fig. 3 shows a lamina made up of two connected len thened sheets, faced with a coverl ing upon goth sides.
In carrying out the aim of my invention, I employ a sheet`or section l of wood veneer and provide one of the faces witha plurality of weakening parallel running grooves 2 the grooves being formed by compresslng the wood.. rllhis construction then provides a member having the parallel-stay orming wood sections 3`witl1 the intervening compressed portions 5 These weakening grooves 2, may run lengthwise of the grain, or they may run slightly oblique to the grain.' After the veneer sheets have been grooved, they are lengthened under force, resultin in the sheets separatingA at the points mar ing the weakest parts of the woods within the grooves 2. The stay forniing portions 3 remain intact, but the coinpressed wood bers within the grooves partly se arate to provide a wooden openwork as isclosed vin Fig. 2. Two or more sheets are then connected in their lengthened condition in such a manner that the stay forming members 3 u on one side of the lamina will run or exten at right angles or obliquely to those upon the o posite side. By this method I provlde a lamina, but half the weight of the board of equal thickness, in which the transverse and longitudinal resistance will be greater and which will be flexible. These made u boards or sheets, ma be used in the manufacture of receptac es, boxes mailing boards, covers of books 4and ot er articles.
The method of grooving and lengthening the veneer may be effected in any suitable workman like manner. V
From the foregoing it will be seen that I provide an expanded wood veneer, and that a plurality of such expanded veneers are securely united to form a laminated board.
This lprocess includes the forming of strips .of veneer running transversely of the wood grain', by suitable planing means preferably includin a lathe for turning a log or block in a p ane transverse of the grain and a planing membe movable transversely of the lathe to engagiJ the periphery of the lo'g or block constantly to produce a continuous strip of veneer. The veneer may then be moistened or treated in any other suitable manner to adap the ber of the wood to ready separation ithout breakage. It then may be lengthened by being passed between two sets of rollers, the second hset engaging the veneer moving at a greater surface speed than the rst set. The rst set of rollers should have smooth surfaces, asshould one of those in the second set; but the other roller in the second set should be provided with longitudinally extending ribs, which compressing the wood slightly against the smooth roller weakens the structure' of the veneer just enough to allow the y spreading of\ the bers on the'line of compression.
And having thus described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
A1. As a new article of manufacture, an expanded wood veneer comprising a wooden openwork held together by intact portions of wood.
2. As a new article of manufacture, an expanded wood veneer comprising a wood openwork held together by unaffected portions of wood running lengthwise of the grain.
3. As a new article of manufacture, an expanded wood veneer comprising a wo openwork held together by untorn portions of wood running diagonally.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a wood veneer having parallel Y running grooves the wood ber within the grooves being partly separated.`
As a. new article of manufacture .a-
wood veneer provided With a parallel run# ning series of grooves formed by compressing the material, the wood bers within the grooves being separated.
6. As a new article of manufacture a laminated body made up of' a plurality of sheets of wood veneer each sheet being expanded to' provide a wood openwork held together by unaected portions of wood said sheets united with their grains extending and running at an angle.
7. A laminated body made up of a plurality of sheets of wood veneer stretched to provide break joints in the wood to form a flat openwork.
- 8. As a new article of manufacture a 'wood veneer provided with parallel running weakening grooves, the wood bers within the grooves being separated, and a backing covering said veneer. n
9. A laminated body, made up of a plurality of sections of wood veneer, each section having a series of parallel running stay forming portions, the wood bers between said stay forming portions being separated, sald veneer sections being secured to one'anot er.
10. A laminated body made up of a plu-` rality of sections of-wood veneer, each sec tion having a series of parallel running stay forming portions, the wood bers between said stay forming' portions bein separated, said veneer sections being secure to one another, and a facing covering said veneer sections.
11. As a new article of manufacture a wood veneer having a series of parallel running stay forming portions the wood bers between said stay forming portions being separated.
12. As a new article of manufacture an expanded wood veneer comprising a plurality of parallel running portions of wood, the material between the parallel portions being separated to provide a wood openwork.
13. A laminated body comprising a sheet of wood stretched diagonally to separate its bers, and Va second similarly stretched sheet of wood disposed with the major dimensions of its bers at right angles to those of the rst named sheet.
14. As a new :article of manufacture, a sheet of wood stretched laterally and diagonally of its grain to separate its bers.
In testimony whereof l aix my signature,
=in presence of two witnesses.
