Description

f Einhell @time tieni f P. F.. RANDOLPH, 0F Jn'nsnrygrptn-ILL1N oIs.
LettersPatent No. 95,265, dated September 28,1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN E OLISHING-MACHINE The Schedule referred to irrthov Lettere Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it 'may concern- Be it known that I, P. Ii. RANDOLPH,.0`- Jerseyvillc, in the countyof Jersey, and State, of Illinois,'`
have invented anew and improved Polishing-Machine; and I do herebydeclare that the following is a full and exact description of the saine; reference being4 of pulleys a greater length of belting can be used ina small space, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention;
Figure 2" is a. side elevation'of the wheel A; and
Figure 3 is a .vertical `centralsection through line :v e;- in iig. 2.
X lrepresents the foundation of the machine, which mayl be of any desired form, on which are located, in suitable bearings, the drivingewheelAB, pulleys C, and grinding and polishingwheel A, which latter consists oi' the circular clamps A A 1,which are confined by the bolt A, and the elastic tube a, which is constructed of rubber or other suitable material, and is inflated and air-tight.
i al represcntsa 'fiat rim, of similar material, and exE tending around the same. The rim al may he merely a protubcrance on thetube a, or attached after the manner of an elastic tire. Its 'object is t0 furnish a hearing-surice for the belt E.
The tube a is provided `on its inner vcircumference with the prqectionaz, which is held between the clamps A1, and confines the hollow rim a firmly in place.
lhe belt'E is composed of duck or 1eat-her,covered with lemery, and passes overthe wheel A,Idriving could otherwise be obtained without extending the same beyond the limits of the machine.
The operation of my invention will be readily undel-stood. The surface to be ground or polished is pressed against thebelt, over the elastic rim' a of thel wheel A, which, by reason of its yielding nature, ad-
.mt-sof `all parts of the surface to come in contact with the belt. It is, therefore, peculiarlyadapted to grinding plowshares -aud other irregular surfaces. I am awarethat ian iniiated rim of India rubber,
coated with sand, hasbeeu-employed, 'but its eonstruetion and attachment are different from my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
' `\Vhat I claim as new,`and desireto secure by Letl ters Patent, is-
The 'wheel A,.consisting of the inflated tube a, rim al,- projection ai, and clamps A1, in combination with the belt E, driving-'wheel B, and pulleys C, arranged -and operating substantiallyA as described.
This specification signed and witnessed, this 12th day of December, 1868.

wheel B, and pulleys G. which latter, by their arrauge- Iment, admit of a much 'greater length of belting than
