Description
Viinitrdtatre @anni Hirt;
To all 'whom it may concern JAMEssUPToN, or BATTLE CREEK,d MICHIGAN.
lLetters Patent No. 95,168, dated Sqitembe/r 21, 1869.
Thechedula referred to in` these Letters Patent and part of the name.
.13e it known that Lames s. UPTON, 0f name Greek, in the county of Calhoun, and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and -nseful Improvement-s fin Horse-Powers; and do herebyI declare that-the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying' draw- `in`gs,`and tothe letters of reference marked thereon, making apart ot' this specification.
. The nature of invention consists in the construetion and arrangement 'o f a bed for horsefpowers, and in" the mode of staking and fastening the same whenv mounted on fourwheels. I
In order to enable othersskilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and 4use the saine, I will n ow proceed to describe its"constr nction and operation, referring to e annexed drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a plan View, and Figure `2, a. vertical cross-section.
`A represents the'woodenbed to the' horse-power,
mounted-on four whee1s,`B B. 1.
`G G are two frames, pivoted, one at each end of the `bed A, and serve, While standing up, as shown in fig.
Y 2, to make a rack or structureifor the purpose of car` rying levers, tumbling-rods, stacker's", &c.
. `Whil threshing, these frames are` to be turned down `and broughtu-p close to the wheels, both fore and hind ivlieels, and while so adjusted, prevent the bedA or horsel'io'wer from rocking on the bolster, making the' pow'erset rmlyfon `the ground.
at its outerl end to an iron brace,E,iforming one brace, which are joined together in the centre of the frame, as plainly .shown in fig. 1, so that the linked ends of the `braces E and levers D extend, one on each side of the powelgto be staked to the ground.
' From the opposite end of the bed A, on both sides, extends a chain, F,Whicl1 is also staked tothe ground when necessary. i
The advantage f coupling at the -centre of the frame is that it prevents. the twisting of the frame, while, if the coupling should be on the outside of the frame, it would be badly strained and twisted. This is wholly prevented by going to the centre of the frame in combination with the frames G O.
A horse-power bed not mounted on Wheels may, of course, be staked and fastened 'in the, same manner.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new,.and desire to secure by Let- I ters Patent, is
The combination of' the bed A, swinging frames C .0, leversl) D, and braces E E, all constructed, ar-
for the purposes herein set forth.
In'testimony that Iclairn the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 20th day of May, 1869. 1 JAMES S. UPTON.
ranged, and combined substantially in themanner and Witnessesz@ Y H. M: STRONG, PARLEY UPTON..
