CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 1., 191d.
Application filed September 3, 1909. serial No. 516,081.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. GENSBURG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to clamps, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a novel clamp for holding a compression plate or follower in a barrel or similar re ceptacle.
Another object of this invention is to provide an adjustable clamp of a simple, durabio and inexpensive construction.
These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by a clamping device that will be presently described in detail and then claimed.
teference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention; but it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof can be varied or changed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Tn the drawing z-Figure 1 is a side elevation of the clamp as mounted in a barrel. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the clamp partly broken away and partly in elevation, and Fig. 3 is a plan of the same.
p in the drawings 1 denotes a bar having one end thereof provided with fixed prongs or pins 2, while the opposite end is provided with a plate 8 substantially oval in plan, said plate being provided with end lugs 1 adapted to be secured to the top of the bar 1 at the end thereof by screws 5 or similar fastening means. The body of the plate 3 is supported a slight distance above the bar 1 and is provided with a longitudinal slot 6 having the side walls thereof provided with oppositely disposed notches or recesses 7.
8 denotes a wire yoke having the rear ends thereof extending under the plate 8, bent inwardly as at 9, bent upwardly as at 10, and forwardly as at 11. The forwardly bent ends 10 are parallel and are curved downwardly, as at 11 to provide finger grips. The upwardly bent portions 10 of the yoke are adapted to engage in the notches or recesses 7 and by pressing the parallel ends 10 toward each other, the yoke 8 can be shifted relative to the plate 3 and locked in adjusted position.
12 denotes a member or strap pivotally connected to the forward end of the yoke 8, said member or strap having the opposite end thereof provided. with a V shaped notch adapted to provide prongs 13.
14 denotes a barrel or receptacle adapted to contain sauer k'raut, pickles or other contents 15 and mounted upon the contents 15 is a compression plate or follower 16. My clamp is employed to hold the plate 16 in engagement with the contents 15 of the barrel, and the manner of locking the clamp in the barrel or receptacle 1 1 is as follows The prongs 2 of a bar 1 are placed in engagement with. the inner side of the barrel 14, and after the yoke 8 has been properly adjusted, the member 1:2 is forced into engagement with the opposite side of the barrel, thus holding the plate 16 upon the contents 15. The clamp can be adjusted for use in connection with barrels or receptacles of diameters within the scope of the clamp adj ustment, and it can be easily removed to obtain the contents of the barrel, or it can be shifted when it is desired to further compress the matter within the barrel.
The bar 1 is preferably made of wood and the remaining elements of metal.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new is A clamp of the type described, comprising a bar provided with pins at one end thereof, a plate mounted on the upper face of the bar adjacent the opposite end with its lower face spaced from the bar and having end lugs for securing the plate to the bar, said plate provided with a longitudinal slot, the side walls of which are provided with notches, a yoke having the arms there of extending underneath the plate and bent inwardly and upwardly at their rear ends to provide notch-engaging port-ions, the free ends of said arms being bent forwardly and overlying the plate, and a strap pivoted to the outer end of the yoke and having its free end provided with engaging points.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL H. GENSBURG.
