Description
UNITED STATES LYMAN R. SVVETT, GE BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Dec. *7, 199.).
Application filed August 23, 1999. Serial No. 514,124.
To oZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYMAN ton, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification.
y invention is designed for receiving and holding contributions for different objects, as in church and Sabbath school collections, and includes several novel features new to be described.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the invention, in which Figure l is a plan of the blank from which the envelop is formed and having its guinincd surfaces shown in shaded lines. Fig. 2 shows the blank with its body portion folded and sealed and with a modification of the sealing flaps. Fig. 3 is a plan View of a completed envelop, and Fig. at is an enlarged edge view of an envelop similar to that shown in F 2, with the flaps in position to be sealed: the gummed surfaces in this view being indicated by small elevations.
The reference letter a, designates the body of the envelop blank, having the broad side flap 6, and the narrow, gunnncd, opposite, side flap 0, which are adapted to be folded over the body and sealed together. and also sealed to the body along the central adhesive surface (Z; thus forming two pockets joined at their inner ends.
The pockets are made separable by the cen tral cross perforations c. The increased thickness resulting from the overlapping of the flap 0 upon the broad flap o, is intentionally located near one side of the body a, in order to bring out distinctly the date and number, when printed with other less important matter on the front of the envelop.
The sealing flaps and g, are made with different outlines, to 'uide the contributor to the proper receptacle for each particular contribution, in accordance with instructions,
which may be printed on the front of the en- SwETT, a I citizen of the United States, residing at Bosvelop, or announced orally, to the congregation. Thus llap f is shown to be pointed in Y but it might as well be made crescent or of any other outline, which would be div rse from that of flap g.
'g. l flap f is shown to be gunnned in the usual way for envelops, but the modification f seen in Fig. 2 is quite narrow and is not gunnned, the part j of flap 9 sealing down the flap f upon its pocket. When the flap f shown in Fig. 1 is employed, it is folded down and sealed over its pocket, and the part j of flap g, is sealed upon it, so that whichever form of flap f or f is used, the outer ends of the pockets are sealed together thus reducing the length of the device one half, and making it more convenient for handling or packing. in order to separate these sealing flaps, the flap 9 is torn along its perforations 7L, and the pockets are entirely separated by t aring along the perforations 6.
The flap y is dry-gumined, receives the per forations la, and is folded back upon itself, during the process of manufacture; so that it needs only to be moistened to be ready for sealing its own pocket, or to be attached to he flap or body, or both flap and body, of he other pocket.
Wh at I claim and desire to secure is,-
fin envelop having two pockets joined at their bottoms and foldable together with their sealing flaps facing each other, a flap on one of said pockets of any preferred construction and a cross perforated sealing flap on the other pocket adapted to seal both pockets. and permit them to be separated.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
