TELEPHONE APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1, 1909.
Application filed August 22, 1908. Serial No. 449,775.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN H. TAYLOR, of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain ApPMZlLk-sf; and I do hereby declare the following to' hea full, clear,'and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in telephone apparatus,-'the object of the invent-ion being to provide a telephone set with an auxiliary ma neto receiver which can be employed in ad ition to the main receiver when using the telephone with a long or in case of defective operation of a telephone line or bf the instruments.
A further object is to so construct and arrange the auxiliary magneto receiver that it can be permitted to remain out of use when its assistance is notneeded, Without affecting or interfering with the use of the main receiver.
With these objects in view the invention struction and combinations of parts as here inafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a telephoneset of the desk type showing an embodiment of my improvement, and Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views. i j
1 represents a telephone set comprisingthe transmitter and magneto hand phone or receiver 3 supported by the switch hook 4 in the usual manner.
An auxiliary magneto receiver has the terminals of its coil connected, through the medium of a flexible conductor cord 6 with the terminals of the magneto hand phone the terminals of said coil being connected with the same binding post 'of the main hand phone 3 with which the terminals of the main conductor cord 7 are connected. From this arrangement, it will be seen thatwhen the main hand phone 3 is removedfrom the switch hook 4 both this hand phone or receiver and the auxiliary receiver will be included in circuit and the operation of the two' will be equally effective. With the use of my improvements, the sound will be magnified in each ear alike, thus producing. a double magnification of sound which inturn is delivered to bothears of the person using the instrument. Should the person using the telephone be should the distance be great, or should there be trouble on the line to such an extent that the sound would not be clear, then the effectiveness of the auxiliary receiver will be added to that of the main receiver and thus the user will be enabled to hear a message distinctly, when this would not be possible with the use of the single receiver commonly employed. Normally the auxiliary receiver will be supported by the telephone set and it can remain in this position (out of use) when its assistance-is not needed, and this, Without interfering with or affecting the operation of the main. receiver.
To form a convenient support for the auxiliary receiver a ring 8 provided with a hook 9, may be placed over the mouth piece of the transmitter and the auxiliary receiver provided with a ring or loop 10 to engage said hook, or other means may be provided whereby the auxiliary receiver can be removably supported bythe transmitter.
My improvements can be easily and quickly applied to any telephone set now in use without in any waychanging the construction of the latter or endangering the adjustments thereof.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,
1. The combination with a telephone set having the usual telephone receiver, of an auxiliary magneto receiver adapted to be used in conjunction with said usual receiver, flexible conductors electrically conmeeting the terminals of the two receivers in parallel with each other, and supporting means for the auxiliary receiver associated with the telephone set.
2. The combination with a telephone set, of an auxiliary magneto receiver, a flexible cord connecting the terminals of the auxiliary receiverwith the terminals of the main a ring to engage the mouth piece of the transmitter, and means for connecting said ring and auxiliary receiver whereby the latter will be removably supported.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribmg witnesses.
WARREN H. TAYLOR. \Witnesses:
