RAG-DUSTER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 920, dated September 14, 1838.`
of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful improvement upon the common ragl duster, by which rags'are readily cleared of dust before going into the engine and by yet so gente as not to fritter away the valuable stock; and I do hereby declare the following is a full and exact description thereof. i Y
I take the common duster A. Figure 1, with its ribs, a, with pins al and shaft B, having pins Z), b, inserted in itin the usual way, the duster being made fast to the shaft, and consequently, revolving with it. The4 above is the common duster. Through the heads of this common duster, and midway between the shaft and the ribs, and on opposite sides of the shaft, I pass two bars C C and hang them on bearings in the heads at c', c. Through these bars, I insert pins o, o, at right angles with them and each other, and extending near to the shaft and to the ribs, and s0 posited as to pass between the pins, both in the shaft and ribs. To these pins I give a reciprocating, or vibratory motion through an arc, equal to from one third to two thirds of a circle. These vperfo-rm from three to four vibrations at every revolution of the duster, and thus whip the rags between the stationary pin in the shaft and ribs, and soon clear them of dust. This vibratory or reciprocating motion is given to the bars containing the pins, by a pinion p, Fig. 2 hung upon the outside of one of the heads, traveling around a stationary wheel,
w, two or three times in diameter. On the axis of the pinion is a crank m, and a crank, y, on the end of each ofthe bars, of such a length, that one third of its circle, shall equal the diameter of that formed by the pinion crank. From this pinion crank, I extend a pitman, n', to each of the others on the end of the bars. Thus coupled,'the revolving of the pinion crank will of necessity, make the other two reciprocate, or vibrate through one third of a Vcircle by means of intermediate wheels, the vibration may be increased at pleasure. It is believed however that one third will be found amply suiiicient. This improvement is preferable to every other, in its delicate yet sufficient action on the rags and the small power required to drive it.
In this improved rag, duster I do not Claim the common duster, or any of its parts, nor the pinion traveling around the stationary wheel, nor cranks or pitmen taken separately; but
I claim, as my improvement- Simply the alternate direct, and retrograde motion on their bearings, of the bars extending through the duster, causing the pins in them to reciprocate, or vibrate between the stationary pins, both in the shaft and ribs,-and their combination with the common duster substantially in manner as aforesaid, and desire to secure the same by Letters Patent.
