UNITED STATES GEORGE PAVLIK, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BRUSH.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that l, (inonon PAvLiK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brushes, (Case 13,) of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a brush which shall be strong, durable and hygienic, and which is constructed in such a manner that the bristles are very firmly held in the holder which is provided therefor.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a central sectional elevation of one form of my improved brush showing the same with a solid handle. Fig. 2 is a central sectional elevation of a modified form of my improved brush showing the same with a wire handle.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, referring to Fig. 1., 5 are the bristles 6 a sheet metal holder which terminates at one end in a shank 7 into which one end of a handle 8 is driven. The bristles are held together by cords 9, 9 extending around the portion of said bristles which projects into the holder 6. These cords form binders and two of them project into recesses formed by the interior of the ribs 10, 1.0, which ribs project outwardly from the holder 6. A spreader 11, preferably conical, is driven or otherwise forced into the holder, thus forcing the bristles laterally up against the interior of said holder, and a wire 12 extends through the spreader, through the holder and through the handle 8 and termiattached and the bristles, together with the nates at its opposite ends in eyes 13, 14-. These eyes form locks to prevent any movement longitudinally of the holder, spreader and handle relatively to each other. The eye 18 is formed upon the wire before the parts are locked together and the eye 14 is formed upon the wire after the spreader has been forced into the holder. The eye 14, besides forming a lock to keep the parts 6, 8 and 11 from becoming disconnected from each other, also serves a convenient means by which to suspend the brush.
In putting the different parts together to form the complete brush, the handle 8 is Specification of Letters Patent.

forced into the shank 7. The bristles 5, after having been dipped in. pitch or other material which is adapted to hold them together and after having been bound with the binders or cords 9, 9, are placed in the holder 6, and the conical shaped spreader is then forced into the holder by means of the wire 1 and also, if desired or necessary, by forcing said spreader into the holder by means of a cylindrical stick or any other suitable means. The wire 12, after the spreader has been driven or otherwise forced into the position shown in Fig. 1, is bent at its outer end into the eye 1 which locks the handle, the holder and the spreader together, with the bristles firmly forced against the interior of the holder 6 and with the binders 9, 9 forced into the recesses within the ribs 10, 10.
In the form of my invention illustrated in Fig. 2 the bristles 5 are held within the holder 6 which holder does not have any shank thereon to receive the handle, but the handle 8 is formed of wire, bent to form a U, the outer ends of the legs of which extend into the holder 6 through holes provided in the closed end thereof. The spreader 11 is substantially the same as the spreaders already described and is held in the holder by the wire 12 which terminates at its opposite ends in eyes 18 and 14 respectively. The eye he, however, it will be noted, abuts against the end of the holder instead of the wire extending through the handle, as in the forms illustrated in F 1 and 2.
The form of my invention illustrated in Fig. 1 is the preferred form, for the reason that it is perfectly hygienic, very strong, durable and cheap. The solid handle 8 seals the interior of the holder so that water can not enter the end to which the handle is spreader, seal the opposite end of the holder, so that there is no chance of water or liquid of any kind with foreign substances therein getting into the interior of the holder.
While I have described my improved brush in two forms as having the wire ter minating at its opposite ends in eyes, for the purpose of locking the holder, spreader and handle together, it is evident that the wire might be bent or headed in a different form from an eye without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:
1. A brush, having in combination, bristles, a binder extending around said bristles and holding them together, a sheet metal holder for said bristles, having a rib formed thereon, projecting outwardly therefrom, and forming a recess Within said holder, into which recess said binder projects, a spreader adapted to spread said bristles Within said holder and force said binder into said recess, a handle, and a Wire extending through said holder, spreader and handle and terminating at its opposite ends in eyes whereby said handle, holder and spreader are locked together.
2. A brush having in combination bristles, a binder extending around said bristles and holding them together, a sheet metal holder for said bristles having a rib formed thereon, projecting outwardly therefrom and forming a recess Within said holder, into which recess said binder projects, said holder having a cylindrical shank, a solid handle projecting into said shank, a spreader adapted to spread said bristles Within said holder and force said binder into said recess, and a Wire extending through said handle, holder and spreader and terminating at its opposite ends in eyes, whereby said handle, holder and spreader are locked together.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of tWo subscribing Wit nesses.
