Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 6, 1909.
Application led November 14, 19.03. Serial N o. 462,600.
To all whom it magnet/wem.'
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. JACKSON, o. subject of the King of Great Britain, and o resident of the city of NewYork, borough of Brooklyn, inl the county of `lfings and State of New York, have invented a new 'and Improved Meter-Loch, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact. description.
This invention relates to loclis for ellecti'ic meters and similar devices, and incre particularly to a meter having :i removable casing wall or closure and a. stud extending through the Wall to the outside of the casing, and a locking har removably secured at one end to the casing and serving yto secure the wall,
`and keepers, one of which .is loosely mounted upon the stud, the latter at the saine time receiving the locking har to hold the saine in' position, the second keeper having .a
threaded opei'iing by means of which it can he screwed upon the stud, the keepers and the locking bar having registering openings which receive a suitable seul to prevent unauthorised opening of the meter.
An object oi' the invention is to provide. :i simple, inexpensive zuid durable lock for electric meters and siinilai devices hy ineens of which unauthorized opening, ot the meter and tuinpering therewith is prevented, and which, When the seal is broken con he easily released and can easily be replaced.
A further object, of the invention is to provide a device of the class described, which cannot be opened Without destroying the seal or the locli itself, with which various kinds of seals can he employed, and which is applicable to different forms of meters.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to hc more fully described hereinafter and lmrticularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to he had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specilicution, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding pui-ts in ill the views, and in Whichi Figure l is a front elevation of an electric' meter showing an embodiment of my invention applied thereto;V Fig. 2 is :i transverse section on the line 2 2 of Fig'. l; Fig. 3 is an enlarged front elevation of o. partoi a ineter showing i modified forni of my invention applied thereto; Fig. et is :i transverse section on the line 1 l oi Fig. 2%; Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the lower pai-t ot anieter ofditi'erent tyne. showingr a further nioditied I forni of my invention applied thereto; Fig. 6
is a` longitudinal section on the line (5 6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is-an edge view of an end of the locking har-showing a modification.
Before proceeding to a more detailed ex planation of iny invention, it Should be cle-arly understood that While the saine is particularly useful iii connection with elec-4 tric meters by means of which the amount olf electric current used by the consumer can he determined, it can also he advantageously employed for other purposes in which it is desired to lock a easing; so that an unauthorized entrance into the casing without leav infnr indications of suoli entry is prevented. Furthermore, the application of my inven tion need not he limited to casings or similar structures, in fact it can'he employed for any purposein which it is desired to lock o closure, provided thatthe closure has projecting through it a stud, and that if the withdrawing of the closure from the stud lis prevented the closure cannot loc opened. If such is the euse, niy nictcr lock con loe suitonly applied to the stud so that the closure cannot he withdrawn without destroying the lock, unscimving the keepers from the stud, or breaking the scarl which is employed in connection with the lock.
Any suitable forni of seal con be used with my meter lock, and as shown :for ex# ample, the seal may consist of a porcelainA body having a i-member inserted therein and Which isso formed that the member canf not he withdrawn without rupturing the body. Again, it may consist of a shank of sott inctal which can be inserted through the opening' provided therefor in the lock, and upon which is pressed a soft metal head so thutihc shank cannot he Withdrawn without lircukingf the suine or i'cinoving the head. Needless to sity. any other suitable type of seul can he eniploycd.
lif'heii applied si'iecially to some forins of meters, the har 'of the lock extends across the inscription plate of the met-er and thus tends to conceal certain of the inscriptions on the plate. As it is often necessary to see these inscriptions, l provide hors of special 'forni which do not interfere With the reading of the inscriptions onf-.the plate, and which therefore do not haue to be removed when it is necessary/.to ascertain for example, the iniiperage or voltage of the meter.

in the 'oi'ni o' iiiy invention shown iii Fitto. l und fl employ ai brueket .li having i threaded opening i8 therethrough b f' ineens or. which it con be screwed upon the rl`ho braio.
