Be it lmown that I, ALEXANDER Hnrsrnn- KAMP, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Hoboken, Hudson county, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slack-Adjusters for Clothes-Lines, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.

This invention relates to an improved slack-adjuster which is adapted for use in connection with clothes lines, halyards, or any similar cables.

To these and other ends, which will hereinafter appear, my invention comprises the novel features of improvement, and combination of parts, which I will now proceed to describe and finally claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view showing the slack-adjuster connected with a clothes line; Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the slack-adjuster; Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof on a reduced scale.

Referring to Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing, my improved slack-adjuster is shown as formed out of one piece of wire or rod. I prefer to make the slack-adjuster in such a manner, but it can be made, as shown in Fig. 4, an integral construction, cast, forged or otherwise formed. In the preferred form shown in Figs. 2 and 3 the numerals 1, 2, and 3 indicate the parallel members, or frame, of the slack-adjuster. The parallel members 1, 2 and 3 terminate, at each end thereof in eyes a and 5. The eye 4 is angularly disposed while the eye 5 is perpendicular to the frame members 1, 2 and 3.

In order to secure the take-up of a rope, I provide the frame members 2 and 3 with cleat members 6 and 7, which are in the form of loops, the said loops being formed by the bending over of the legs 8, 9, 10 and 11. The leg 10 is carried downwardly below the frame members, 1, 2 and 3 and terminates in a hook 12. The leg 9 finishes up about flush with the tops of the frame members 1, 2, and 3.

The above described formation can be easily accomplished when the wire isv hot or cold; however, such formations are well known to the iron-worker.

The function of my improved slackadjuster is as follows: Through the eye 4 I pass one end of a clothes line 19, for instance, (Fig. 1) and knot the said end as at 20, or tie it to the eye. The said rope passes over sheaves 21 and the other end of the rope is passed through the eye 5 and pulled taut, a half-hitch is then taken around the cleat members 6 and 7, and the balance of the rope is rolled up and hung on the hook 12. If a person wishes to tighten or loosen the rope, it is but necessary to take up the rope around the cleat members 6 and 7. To loosen the rope it is cast off cleat members 6 and 7 and then made fast again.

My improved slack-adjuster is not only adapted for the purpose of hitching the line, but it is also adapted to carry the unused portion thereof.

Having now described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A slack-adjuster, comprising contiguous frame members, said frame members being formed at each end thereof, into eyes, one of said frame members being formed into a cleat member, the other of said frame members being also formed into a cleat member and terminating into a hook, said slackadjuster being formed from one piece or rod..
