A. Z. LONG, OF SCRANTO-N, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF AND W. G. DOWD, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 91,140, dated JuneS, 1869.
IIIPROVBD CAR-COUPLING.
The Schedluk referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.
To all whom it ma/y concern:
.Be it known that I, A. Z. LONG, of Scranton, in
. the county. of Luzerne, and State of Pennsylvania,
have invented a new and improved Oar-Coupling; and I.do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, making a part of this speci-- so constructed that itis adapted to couple together,
cars of unequal height, and also cars constructed-for diflerent gauges of road.
In the drawings A A represent the ends of two 'cars,' which are coupled together by the operation of the hook B, and the casting O, in the following uia-nner:v
The hook Bis pivoted onjointed to one of the cars at a, so that it can be adjusted to lie in any one of the three (or more) notches e e e of the plate E, extending .below and in front of the shank of the, hook, in the manner clearly shown in fig. 2, and thereby can be adjusted to couple witha car built for any other gauge of road.
The hook B is provided with a long curvedinclined head, I), which, as it strikes against-the curved inclined bottom of the casting O, at c c 0, will slide up until the point of the hook drops into the slot, 0, when the cars will be securely coupled together.
The casting O is made not only with inclined bottom, 0, but with oblique side-walls, c 0, arranged to intercept the head of the hook, and direct it towards -the slot 0, as the cars come together. The length of the incline 0, together with the length of the inclined head .b, adapts the cars to couple together without failure, although they may be of different heights.
The length and weight of the head also prevent the cars from uncoupling by accident.
The hook may be lifted out of the slot, to uncouple the cars, by means of the horn 'i or any other device may be employed for the purpose, as preferred by thev constructor.
The part 0' may be made of wrought-iron, if preferred.
V The book can be attached to the top or side of the draw-head, and so adjusted as not to couple automatically, when not desirable to have it.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new,'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, .is-
1. In connection with the hook B, jointed to the car H, the curved plate E, provided with the notches ea 0*, as and for the purpose specified.
2. As a whole, the automatic carcoupling device, consisting essentially of the jointed hook B; plate E, having three or more notches, e e 0 and casting 0, having the slot 0 the oblique curved walls 0 c and the inclined bottom 0, substantially as and for the purpose described.
To the Iabove specification of my improvement, I have set my hand, this 236. day of J auuary, 1869.
A. Z. LONG.
