To en wiom it may concern.'
Be it' known that I, WILLIAM A. KIRKPAT- RICK, a citizen of the United States, and a .resident of Abb ville, in the county of Reno and State of ansas, have invented a new and Im roved Dis pensing-Con' einer, of which the fol owing is a full, clear, and exact descri tion. y
iis invention relates to dispensing containers, more particularly such as are used to hold straws to be served with drinks at bars, soda-water fountains, and the like, and which delivers one straw at a time from a closed receptacle.
An object of this invention is to provide a simple and serviceable container having means for holding the straws in a closed receptacle, thus obviatingY dust and dirt coming in contact with the straws.
A Jurther object of the invention is to provide means for releasing one straw at a time from the container, and further means for catching the straw thus released and holding it so that it may easily be taken by the user.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more full described hereinafter and particularly set orth in the claim. i
Reference isl to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, Fig. 2 is an enlar ed end View having `a part removed to show t 1e means for operating the device; Fig. 3 is an enlar ed iront view, showing straws in dotted outine; Fig. 4 is a cross section showing thc rotatable delivering means receiving a straw at the inside of .the container; and Fig. 5is a cross section showing the delivering means after a straw has been dispensed.
Before proceeding with a more detailed description of my invention, it should be understood that I provide a straw holder, which is. veerisitructed to contain any desired number 1 ci straws and keep them out of contact with dirt or dust until they are'ready to be used.
A manually-operable mechanism releases one straw at a time and permits it to drop on a rack suitabl and which eeps the straw from falling o n the counter or on the floor. While this depositioned to receive the same` vice has been shown for dispensing straws it may also be used for dis ensing toothpi ci arettes, or other artic es.
el'erring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents a container or receptacle havin end members 2, the latter being extende to form supports 3. Between the end members 2 is carried the back of a rece tacle, comprising a Wall 4 and an angular y-disposed lid 5 secured thereto by means of inges 6. The front of the receptacle consists of angularly-disposed walls 4', of pg;- erably transparent material, such as g A cross su port 7 is secured upon the end ppinbers 2 y means of screws 8, nails, or the i e. i
Mounted upon the sup ort is a catch 9 of any common preferred orm, for instance, such as is shown in the accompanyin drawings, for securing the lid 5 by means o a stud 5'* upon the latter. Rotatably arranged in openings 10`in the end members 2, and located artly between the lower wai" 4 and the wa l 4 of the container, is a'deliverer 11, having a suitable groove 12 for receiving a straw, as shown most clearly in 4. Suitable studs 13, preferabl rounded in Ecrin, are mounted on the deliveisi' l1. Slots 14 in the wall 4Y of the containerpermit the movement of the studs, `the latter acting to position a new straw to be taken by the groove 12, as illustrated in Fig. 5, and further agitato the mass of straws to prevent the same from sticking or becoming jammed.
Actuating mechanism, consisting of a manually-operable lever 15 located in an opening 19 in one end of the dcliverer having a gri' 16 at the end thereof, an elongate resi lent member 17 having one end secured to the end mem ber 2 and having the other end engagin the lever l5 to resist the movement thereo and studs 18 to limit thcunovement of the lever in operating the deliverer, is arranged at the outside of one of the end members 2.
A suitable housing 20 is employed to protect mechanism.
the actuatin ctween the supports 3 of the Arranged container are cross rods 21. suitable material, such as wire or the like, are located under the deliverer for receiving the straws as they fall from the deliverer, bein mounted on the cnd members 2. Meta plates 23, having their lower ends slightly ent, are arranged' Within the housing for asacks 22 of any sisting in the ositioninf?1 of the straws in the deliverer, andnare secured to the end members by means of screws or nails 24.
In the operation of the device, straws are received by the groove l2, which is positioned for this pur ose adjacent to one of the inclined walls of t ie container in the normal position of the deliverer. The actuating mechanism then rotates the deliverer, so that the straws are taken from the inside of the container and allowed to drop upon the racks 22. In the meantime, the studs 13 have positioned other of the straws against the inclined wall of the container which is adjacent to the groove, so that when the deliverer is again rotated to its normal'position by the action of the resilient member 17, another straw is ready to fall into the groove.
Having;r thus described my invention, l claim as new und desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A dispensing container comprisingl a receptacle having end walls extended to form feet,
a back comprising a bottom and an angularly disposed lid, and a front comprising a bottom and an angularl dis osed top, the bottom of the front an the ottoni of the back being spaced apart from each. other to form an opening, the opening extending the full length of the receptacle, a roller lgournaled in the opening and provided with a longitudinal groove, said roller having be hind the groove, projecting studs for the urpose set orth, and bein provided outsi e of the Casin@ with means or rotating the said roller, and` curved racks for receiving the material delivered by the groove arranged below the receptacle.
In testimony whereof I have signed. my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM. A. KIRK PATRICK.
