Application filed August 1 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM Humor and PATRICK F. FARRELL, citizens of the United States, residing at Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliver Lap-Machines, of which the 'followin is a specification, reference behad to the accompanying drawings.

The object of the invention is to provide improved means for guiding the slivers as they enter the drawin rolls and the calender rolls and thereby maie the lap more even and eoml-pact so that it will be without breaks and wil run better and consequently increase the production of the combing machines.
A further object of the invention is to provide guide devices of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in construc tion, which may be quickly and easil adjusted to accommodate any number of s ivers from twelve to twenty and which will dispense with the necessity of using ribbon lap machines and also require less attention of the operator and thereby decrease the cost of production, lessen waste and insure better work.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arran ement of arts hereinafter full descri ed and claimed, and illustrated in he accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section through a portion of a sliver lap machine illustrating the application of the improved guides; Fig. 2 is a detail section, parts shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view showing the improved guides upon the portion of the sliver lap machine on which they are mounted; Fig. 4 is a detail perspective of the main or sliver ide plate and its adjustable .su porting rackets; Fig. 5 is a detail vertica section through the parts shown in Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a detail pers ective of one of the selvage guides; and ig. 7 is a detail section through the same showm the manner in which it is su ported and adjusted.

All of the above parts are old and well known and form no part of the present invention.
11 denotes the improved main guide for the slivers. This guide is in the l'orrn -of is vertically disposed late arranged immediately in advance of tlie drawing rolls and adjustable in both vertical and horizontal planes. The slivers pass over the upper edge 12 of this plate, which edge is cut away on anarc, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, so that the different slivers will be caused to enter the drawing rolls in a perfectly uniform position. The gui plate is supported and adjusted by means of two brackets 13 ea'ch of which has a base portion 14 arranged upon a horizontal plate on the frame 1 and a vertically project- -1ng standard 15 to which the guide plate is secured. The standards 15 of the two brackets are formed with vertical slots 16 to receive clamping screws 17 which enter threaded openings or sockets 18 in the uide plate adjacent to its ends. The base ates 14 of the two brackets are formed wit longitudinal slots 19 to receive clamping screws which enter threaded openings in the frame 1. The slots 19 and screws 20 ermit the brackets and, consequently, the s iver guide plate 11 to be adjusted in a horizontal plane or transversely of the machine and the slots 16 and screws 17 permit said late 11 to be adjusted in a vertical plane. t will be seen therefore that these adjustments of the sliver guide plate permit it to receive any number of slivers from twelve to twenty and that the adjustment may be quickly and easily effected.
21 denotes the improved selvage guides which are arranged immediately in front of the calender rolls 5 and cause the lap to be built up firmer and, consequently, revent the splitting and licking up of t e lap. These guides are similar, one bein on each side of the sheet of sliver and eac consisting of a semi-cone-shaped tube 22 fixed on one end of a supporting and adjusting late 23. The latter engages the bearing 0 the calender rolls 5 or any other portion of the frame 1 and is formed with a longitudinal slot 24 to receive a clamping screw 25 which enters a threaded socket 26 in said bearing,
5 the calender rolls, 6 the fluted calender rolls, and plate between the calender rolls as shown more clearly in Fig. 7. The provision of the slot 24 and the screw 25 permit of an extensive horizontal adjustment of the selvage guide and also of a limited vertical or angular adjustment. Said horizontal adjustment of the two selvage guides permits them to be adjusted to accommodate angvnumber of slivers from twelve to twenty. e have found in practice that when our improved guides are used on sliver lap machines the work produced is much more even than that produced on the ordinary machines and that there is consequently less waste in the combin machines. The invention not only causes etter work to be produced by the machine and lessens Waste, ut also effects a saving in labor since the la will unwind in a perfectly smooth sheet without any attention from the operator and thus enables one operator to attend to a larger number of combing machines.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
1. In a sliver lap machine, the combination with the frame, the spoons, and the drawing rolls, of a stationary sliver guide plate arranged between the spoons and drawin rolls and disposed vertically, said guide p late being located close to and in advance of the drawin rolls and having its upper edge formed with a longitudinal curvature having its lowest point at its center, whereby the slivers will be caused to enter the drawin rolls in a uniform position to render the lap even and regular and means whereby said guide plate may be adjusted in both vertical and horizontal planes.
2. In a sliver lap machine, the combination with the frame, the spoons, and the drawing rolls, of a stationary sliver guide plate arranged. between the spoons and drawing rolls and disposed vertically, said guide plate being located close to and in ad- 1 vance of the drawing rolls and having its upper edge formed with a longitudinal curvature havin its lowest point at its center, whereby t 1e slivers will be caused to enter the drawing rolls in a uniform position to render the lap even and regular, right angular su porting and adjusting brackets, one for eac 1 end of the guide plates and each consisting of a slotted base plate and a slotted standard, and fastenings passed,
through the slots in the standards and into the guide plate and through the slots in the base plate and into the plate, whereby the guide plate may be adjusted in both vertical and horizontal planes.
3. In a sliver lap machine, the combination with the frame, the drawing rolls and the calender rolls, of a pair of selvage uides, each having a semi-cone-sha ed gui e ortion to engage one edge of t e sheet 0 sliver and a longitudinally slotted attachin plate projecting from the semi-cone-shape guide portion and pivotin and adjusting screws passed through the s otted attaching plates and into the frame, whereby the selvage guides may be adjusted horizontally toward and from each other and also angularly in a vertical plane.
4. In a sliver lap machine, the combination with the frame, the drawing rolls and the calender rolls, of a sliver guide plate disposed vertically in front of the drawing rolls and having a curved u per ed e, means for adjusting said guide plate in oth vertical and horizontal planes, and selvage guides horizontally adjustable upon the frame and having semi-cone-shaped guide portions tense.
