CHUTE To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that vWALTER G. BERG, formerly a citizen of the United States, residing in New York city, New York, but now deceased, did during his lifetime invent certain Improvements in Chutes, of which the following is a specification.
One object of this invention is to construct a double chute particularly adapted for use in connection with coal pockets in loading locomotive tenders with coal, but it will be understood that it may be used for other pur oses where it is desired to mix two gra es or two different kinds of coal or other l5 material.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for regulating the discharge from each section of the chute.

A is the framework of the bin or coal bucket.

c is a counterbalance rod connected to a chain c from which is hung a balance weight O. The balance weight may be of the comensating type, if desired, without departing rom the invention.
The chute has a hood b at the outer end to prevent the coal or other material shooting past the discharge point when it slides down 40 the chute with any rapidity. The chute has a central partition D made up of two plates d, d at each side spaced a given distance a art and between these plates is mounted t e mechanism for operating the gate. At
each side of the chute are plates d spaced a given distance from the outer edge of the chute, which also protects the operating mechanism.
E and F are two gates-one for regulating the flow of material through one passage B and the other for regulating the flow of material through the other passage B2.

Each is constructed followsz-T he gate E has side members E pivoted at e to the plates d, (Z and have toothed segments e2 with which mesh pinions g on each end of the tubular shaft G adapted to bearings in the frame H to which the chute is pivoted. On one end of this tubular shaft is a hand wheel gf by which it is turned. Extending tluough the shaft G is a shaft I which is adapted to bearings in the frame II at the opposite side of the chute and on this shaft are two pinions t', t which mesh with segments f 2 on the side members F of the gate F and on the opposite end of this shaft is a hand Wheel i. by which the said shaft is turned, so that on turning the hand wheel t" the gate F can be raised or lowered and on turning the hand wheel g the gate E can be raised or lowered, and by this means the How of material can be regulated at will from a 'fixed point.
The gatos are not affected by the movement of the chute when the chute is raised and lowered and they are under the full control of the operator who can regulate the amount of material flowing through each section, and the proper mixture can always be provided by regulating the gates.
I/Vhat is claimed is 2- 1. The combination of two pockets situated side by side, a pivoted chute hung from the mouth of the pockets and having a partition dividing the chute into two passageways, one communicating with one pocket and the other communicating with the other pocket, pivoted gates for each passageway, two shafts, one mounted within the other, and a hand wheel for each shaft, one shaft controlling the movement of one gate and the other shaft controlling the movement of the other gate.
2. The combination of a chute having two passageways therein communicating with a single discharge opening, two gates independently mounted in bearings in the said chute, one closing one passageway and the other closing the other passageway, toothed segments on each gate, a tubular shaft havl ing two pinions thereon meshing with the segments of one gate, a long shaft passing through the hollow shaft and having two l pinions thereon meshing with the segments the gates.
