BOTTLE SEAL AND CLOSURE.
Patented March 30, 1909.
Application filed June 6, 1908. Serial No. $37,127.
To all whoa-z it 'may concern:
le it known that l, l).\vm Atrrnun IVM.- nmas, a vitizen ot the I'nited States, and a resident of ltepresa, in the vomit)r of Sacramento and State of California. have invented a new and lmprmed lottle Seal and (flo-nre. of whivh the following is a full, vlear. and exact description.
ois invention relates to vert ain improvements in nxt-ath` for vlosing and sealing bott-les. so that die)` vaunot be opened without breaking or vatting the eeal.
'l'be objvvt ot' tln` invention is to provide a easing for vovering the entire bottle. thv upper portion oi' the raming forming a sealing vap vovering the vork and holding the latter in plave. The ap so eeenredto the bottle neck that it vannot be removed without breaking the bottle or vatting the eap.
and the vap is .ao .aevnred to the Cork that upon the vntting otY the former. the Cork and separated portion of the eap may be removed together.
Referent-tis to be had to the aeeomlmnying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which `similar eharaetera4 ot' ret'- vrenee indivate vorrez-,pomling parts in` all'. the figures. and in whivh- Figure 1 is a .-idtelevatitm of a bottle of the easing, and, ifdesired, a portion of the neck 1T thereof, may be longitudinally tinted or vorrugated, so as to give an added protevtion to the glass of the bottle and prevent it from being broken by blows against the outer surface of the casing. Adjacent the annular groove 13 of the bottle, the Casing neek is provided with an outwardlyextending bead 1S, forming a groovein the inner snrt'ave of the casing neck, and adjaeent the groove 1'.) of the. bottle is an inwardly-direvted bead 19 in the Casing. At the extreme end ot` the easing is an outwardly-extemling bead 20. forming a groove in the inner Surface of the easing, for the reveption ot' the annular tlange 15 of the vork. The vas-ing extends acrossthe top of the vork and the latter iS firmly secured in piave b v sealing wax 21, or othetfsnitable material, disposed intermediate the top of the vork 141 and the top 9.2 of the casing.
ln assembling the parta after the bottle is titled, the cork t-t is .secured within the top of the easing and the bottle. is inserted into the taxing from the lower end thereof. The, bottle and casing are forced together until the vork enters the bottle and tbe bead 19 of the vzw-ing enters the groove 1:2 of the bottle vonstruvted in aeeordanee with my inven- I tion. having a portion ot' the melo-img va-iy ing broken away; Fig. .2 is a ventral longitudinal set-tion through the bottle neck and cap); and Fig. 3 a section similar to Fig. Q, nt showing the eork and a portion of the ea i removed from the bottle.
ly improved bottle may be of any snitable shape or formed .ot' any Suitable material, but is pret'eraldy ot glass and formed with a bod)v portion it) and a neck 11 of ref duved diameter. The outer surt'ave of the 1 neck is provided with two annular groove4 i 12 and 13, spat-ed a .-'hort dist'anve apart and adjacent the month otl the bottle. wise, the bottle re.\'emblea` ordinary bottles commonly tound on the market'.
After tilting the bottle., the month is closed by a cork or other suitable stopper 14 entering a short distante into the month of Other the bottle and having an annular tlange 15 disposed adjacent tl-\v outer surface of the bottle month. The mire bottle is invlosvd with a sheet metal aluminum and .-:o formed as to t'ollow the Contour of the b'ottle. The, body portion 16 net-k. Sealing wax` pewter. or other suitable material is then poured through an opening 23 in the bead 1S, so aa to lill the annular spave between the. bead and the groove t3 and form a locking collar 24. positiret)v preventing the removal of the bottle from the casino'. The bottle can now be opened onliV by cutting away the upper portion of the tuning. whieh may be readily done when it is desired to open the bottle. but a t't er it i.- onee opened, it cannot be recto-'ed without leaving evidence-of the fact that the bottle ha.`l been opened.
lmtead of providing the. opening 23 for the libertino ot` the sealing wax. pewter, or other lwailing material. the bottle may be inverted and the sealing material 'ponrned in at the bottom of one or more of the tlutes or eorrngations. ln thirs` case. any sealing material that voole` bet't'n'e. it reachea` thev bead 1S. will additionall)v Serve for lovking the bottle and eaaing together. To open the. bottle. l preferably out the cap adjaeent.
' the month ot' 'the bottle and beneath the easing, prvt'eraldy ofi tta-.nge l5 ot' the easing, so that upon remov` ing the top-2; ot the easinf, the eork will :tl-o be removed and carried by sato top.
nv suitable means ma)- be. provided foi-l By the use of my invcntiointhe wines` and i other liquids which are to be dispensed, may
be put up in very attractive forni., as the casingr may bear any suitable ornamentation. The bottle may be of the very cheapest inaterial. as it is concealed within the casing and any imperfections will not be visible. The casing protects the bottle during shipment. particularly if the casing,r is corrugated or tinted` and the casing cannot be removed without the knowledge. of such removal bel. ing iiniparted upon a mere cursory examination o. the bottle.
T he bead 19, which enters the groove 12, not only serves to hold the bottle and casing together, but also prevents any of the sealing material which is inserted through the opening 23, from passing upward into engagement with the flange of the cork or the mouth of the bottle. Thus, when the bottle is opened, none o the sealing material will be visible.
Having thus described. my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: t
1. A bottle having,` a. substantially cylindrical body and a substantially cylindrical neck of smaller diameter than said body and provided with an annular groove in its outer surface, a sheet metal casing` inclosing said bottle, a portion of .said casing conforming to the body of said bottle, a second portion .whereby it of said casing conforming to the neck of said bottle and having?r an outWardly-extendan outwardly-extending bead -above the mouth of the bottle. a. sealing material illing the outer space between said groove and said first-mentioned bead, and a closure within the mouth of said bottle and having an annular flange extending into said second mentioned bead, said cap 'portion being integral with said neck portion and separable therefrom and carrying .said closure.
A bottle having a. substantially e'vlindrieal body and a substantially cylindrical neck of reduced diameter7 a casing inclosing said bottle and havin a body portion conforming to the body osaid bottle and a neck portion conforming 'to the neck of said bottle and having a cap portion covering tlie 1nouth of said bottle, said cap portion being provided with an outwardlyextending bead above the mouth of the bottle, a closure within the month of the bottle and having an annular iiange extending into sai( bead, the said cap portion being integral with said neck portion and separable therefrom and carrying said closure, an'd means intermediate the. ends of the neck portion of said casing for preventing longitudinal movement thereof in respect to the bottle.
In testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
