COMBINED PAPER HOLDER AND CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 28, 1909.
Application filed January 12, 1909. Serial No. 471,964.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIVERT N onnsnoe, a citizen of the United States, residing at Story City, in the county of Story and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in a Combined Paper Holder and Cutter, of whichthe following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to paper holders, especially adapted for holding rolls of paper so that portions of the same may be drawn from the roll when desired for use, and the invention has particularly in view a com bined paper holder and cutter in which the roll is supported upon spring arms carried by a cutting base, in such a manner that a portion of the paper may at all times be held in position ready to be torn from the roll when desired for use.
With the above and other objects in view the invention comprises certain features of novelty as will be described in detail in the following description, pointed out in the ap pended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Referring to said drawings Figure 1 is a detail side elevation of the improved paper roll holder and cutter, showing the paper thereon. Fig. 2 is a erspective view, the paper being indicated y dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of. a portion of the cutter base, showing the paper thereon, and also showing the connection of the roll-supporting arms therewith. Fig. 4 is a pers ective view of one corner of the cutter ase showing another method of fastening the roll holder thereon. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one corner of a cutter base showing the same equipped with a detachable paper cutter.
Referring to the said drawings by numerals, 1 designates a cutter base, which is preferably flat and having one edge 2 sharpened by inwardly inclining the same to provide a sharp cutting edge for tearing off the paper in a straight line when the paper is held against the cutting edge in a manner well known. The cutter base 1 is shown as resting upon a table or counter 3.
The roll holder is preferably formed of a single length of wire which is bent or shaped to form a guiding and holding arm 4 the ends of which terminate in an eye 5 through which a staple 5 a passes for holding the same to the cutter base parallel with its cutting edge 2. From the end eyes 5, the wire is bent at right angles to the guiding and holding arm {1 and passed over the same to form side arms 6 the ends of which are inturned to form roll-engaging fingers 7 which enter the opening in the center of the roll of 1p aper A.
In using the improved paper ho der, the roll A is mounted upon the fingers or spindles 7 of the side arms 6, and the weight of the roll will hold said arms on an incline so that the bottom of the roll will rest upon the surface of the base 1. While the arms 6 are held in this position, it will be seen that they are constantly bearing upon the holding and guiding arm 4 to cause it to lie against the surface of the cutter. A portion of the paper is then withdrawn from the roll and fed beneath said holding and guiding arm with its edge projecting beyond the cutting edge of the base 1, so that when the paper is desired for wrapping or other purposes, the.
projecting edge of the paper is grasped and pulled outwardly until enough paper is had, whereupon the same is pulled down over the cutting edge and may be readily torn off. The holding and guiding arm of the roll holder being set back a short distance from the cutting edge, it will beseen that after the desired amount of paper has been torn from the roll, enough paper projects beyond the holding and guiding arm to permit of the edge being grasped to withdraw more paper when desired.
In Fig. 4 of the accompanying drawings the roll holder has been shown as having its eyes fastened to the base 1 by means of screws 8. This manner of attaching the roll holderto the base performs substantially the same function as the staple, and also permits the same to be readily detached there from when desired.
In Fig. 5 the base 1 is provided with ade tachable and preferably metal cutter blade 9 having a sharpened edge 10. This cutter blade is preferably held in engagement with the base 1 by means of the screws 11, but it will, of course, be understood that other detachable fasteners may be used. This form of the invention is especially adapted for use in stores and the like where the paper is being constantly withdrawn from the roll and torn ofi across the cutting edge, such con stant use of the cutting edge bein likely to wear the same off if it were of woo as in the forcrln of the invention shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, an 4.
It will be seen that in both forms of the invention the paper is held so that it may be readily withdrawn from the roll, and as the material which holds the roll consists of but a single length of wire bent to the required shave and having a detachableconnection with the base, the whole device may be readily and chea3ly constructed, and yet perform efficient y all the functions for which it is designed.
I claim as my invention 1* 1. A device of the character described comprising a base provided. with a cutting edge, a paper holding and guiding arm detachably connected with the base, and roll engagingarms projecting from said holding and guiding arm.
2. A device of the character described comprising a base provided with a cutting edge, a paper holder and guide detachably connected therewith and arranged parallel with the cutting edge, and roll-holding arms projecting at right angles from the holder and guide and adapted to bear upon the same when supporting a roll.
3. A device of the character described comprising a base provided with a cutting edge, a paper holder and guide detachably connected therewith and arranged parallel with the cutting edge, and rollholding arms projecting from and integral with said holder and guide and adapted to bear upon the same when supporting a roll.
4. A device of the character described comprising a base provided with a cutting i elaooo edge, a paper holder and guide formed of a single length of wire shaped to provide a paper clamping and guiding arm having end eyes and angular side arms provided with inturned fingers for engaging with and sup porting a roll, said side arms projecting across the guiding and clamping arm and bearing thereupon when carrying a roll, and detachable fasteners for securing the eyes to the cutter base.
5. A device of the charactr-n' described conn rising a flat base, a cuttil'ig blade detachably secured to one edge of the same, a paper holder formed of a single length of wire shaped. to provide a clamping and guiding arm and side arms having inturned lingers for engagement with a roll, said arms projecting across and bearing upon the clamping arm when. supporting a roll, and fasteners for detachably holding the clamping and guiding arm to the flat base.
6. A device of the character descriln-xd comprising a base provided with a cutting edge, a roll holder and paper clamp and guide detachably connected with the base and formed of a single length of wire shaped to provide a paper guide and. clamp having side arms projecting therefrom which engage with and support the roll.
In testimony whereof I hereunto a'HiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
