Description

J. H. BEAN, OF MARIETTA, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSTELF, ABRAM PRATT, AND JAMES A. TENNEY.
Lette/rs Patent N. 91,508, dated .Tame 22, 1869.
IMPROVED HEEL-CUTTER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it lnul/y concern Be it known that I, J. H. BEAN, of Marietta, in the county of Washington, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Heel-Outters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention is an improvement on the one patented by J. H. Bean, March 16, 1869; and consists in a device for removing the taps when cut out by the die also in an improved method of attaching the die, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the drawingsltigure 1v is a side elevation of my invention.
Figure 2, a side elevation ofthe lever.
Figure 8, a perspective view of the die-holder.
'lo enable others skilled in the-art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and mode of operation. i
A represents the vertical standard, and B, a curved arm attached thereto, in which works the vertical` shaft C, operated by the lever D, all of -which parts have been fully described in the invent-ion above allnded to.
E represents the lever, which removes the taps from the die, and is pivoted, near its upper end, to the projection e on the arm B, above which it is bent inward, and provided at its upper end with an elongated slot, b, through which passes a set-screw, b', which attaches it to the shaft O.
The lever E passes downward parallel with the shaft, and is bent inward at right angles, as shown at el, where it is bifurcated, and a tongue, e, hinged therein, which has a limited vertical swinging motion,
in order to prevent injury Vto the lever, if it strikes the top ofthe leather instead of the edge thereof.
If desired, however, the 'hinge may be dispensed with, and the whole be made rigid.
F represents the die-holder, which is constructed like that in the former patent, excepting that the die is rigidly attached instead of being movable, and is attached to the lower end of the shaft C, by means of a thumb-screw, f,- and when a different die is to be employed, a different holder is also used, the die being rigidly attached thereto.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
When the shaft C is depressed by the devices before described, the upper end of the lever E is also depressed, and by means of the slot b, and set-screw b', gives the lower end thereof an outward motion, which carries the bent end c2 outside of the -dieholder.
When the shaft O returns to its former position, the lever is forced inward, and pushes the tap out of the holder.
By hingiug the end of the lever, all danger of breaking the same is obviated, should it strike the top of the leather before it is pushed up clear ofthe die.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The bent lever E, with its slot I), in combination with set-screw b and shaft O, as and for the purpose described.
2. The lever E, when provided with the hinged tongue e2, substantially as described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 19th day of March, 1869.
J. H. BEAN.
Witnesses HENRY BOHL, O. K. GURBIER.
