APYPLIOATION FILED JUNE 23, 190B.

WITNESSES A T ORNE Y8 HARRY PERCY CONNOR, OF ENGLEWOOD, NEW JERSEY- DOOR-CATCH.
Spec fication of Letters Patent.
Patented March 9, 1909.
I Application filed June 23, 1908. Serial No. 439,968.
To all whom it may concern: 4 Be it known that I, HARRY PERCY CON- NOR, a citizenot' the United States, and a resident of Englewood, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Door-Catch, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
1 My invention relates to door catches, my more particular purpose being to produce a device of this character in which the locking of the latch has a positive relation to the pressure exerted by the door or other swinging member in opening.
My invention further relates to various improvements in the construction of the mechanism whereby its general efficiency is improved. 1 Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my improved catch'mounted in position for use. upon a door, this view showing the bent lever having a latch integral with it and actuated directly by pressure of the door in opening .so as to obtain a positive grip u on the door, the view further showing mec anism for re, leasing the latch; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan? showing the latch and the top edge of the door; and Fig. 3 is an end elevation showing the device viewed as from the right of Fig. 1,i the door being removed. The door is shown at 4, and is provided at its top' with a Wearing plate 5 of metal, this wearing late being sunken close to the surface of t e door. Mounted upon the door, and partially protected by the wearing plate 5, is a roller 6. The latch 7 is mounted upon a pivot 8, and is provided with a downwardly projecting portion 9. The latch, including its downwardly projecting portion 9, has generally the form of a bent lever. \upon the downwardly projecting portion 9, g and integral with it, is acup 10 containing a p buffer 11 made of soft rubber or other resili- *l em material, and having a substantially cylindrical form. A wall ilatc 13 has integral therewith ears 8" in w ich the pivot 8 is journaled. A bent lever 14 is mounted upon a pivot pin 15 and is provided witha portion 16 projecting a little way outwardly from the 3 11 and pushes the latch out toward the left; E this causes the latch to assume the position indicated by full lines in Fig. 1, that is to say,-
Mounted wall plate. The bent lever 14 is providbd -with a shoulder 17 which is ada ted to engage a shoulder 18 upon the wal plate 13. Ears 19 integral with the wall plate '13, sup,-
porta ivot pin 15, and a wall'20 supports the we plate 13. A chain 19 isattached to the portion 16 of the lever 14. By pulling the chain 19 downward, the lever 14 is rocked so that the shoulder 17 engages the shoulder 18, thus limiting the movement of the lever 14.
The operation of my device is as follows: hen the door 4 is swung toward the wall 20, the latch 7 is raised by the roller 6,;as indicated bydotted lines in Fig. 1, and after the door is in close proximity to the bufier 11, the latch clears the top of the door and drops into the position indicated by full lines in Fig. 1, the weight of the latch tending to bring it into said position. If, however, owing to the quickness of movement of the door, or to any sluggishness on the part of the latch 7, it should happen that the weight of the latch fails to bring it into the position it should assume, the door engages the buffer the movement of the door in pressin upon the buffer 11, forces the latch positively into position to grip the door and hold it open.
positively. A pull upon the chain 19 now rocks the lever 14 and causes the buffer 11 to release the door, the latch meanwhile swing-- ing slightly, as indicated by dotted lines in. v Fig. 1. The arts are so proportioned that the pressure 0 the buffer 1 1 against the door, takes place only when the latch is in such. position as to clear the door and thus allow the lever 14 to move from the wall 20.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and de: 0 Patent,
1. The combination of a door, a latch; for
temporarily holding the same, said latch! being provided with a projecting portionidisposed partially within the path of travel of; the door, a butler mounted upon said projecting portion and normally en aged by,
said door, and a lever disposed upon the side i of said projecting portion opposite saidbuffor for the purpose'of engaging said projecting portion in order to orce said buil'e-r against said door.
