DBAFT-RIGGING FOR RAILWAYCARB Specification of Letters Patent. Application med may 4, 1907.
Patented Nov. 3, 190B.
Serial No. 371,734.
To all whom fit 'may concern:
lle it known that I, Jol-IN F. OCoNNon, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and' State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improveinont in Draft-Rigging for Railway- (ars, oi' which the following is a specification.
vMy invention relates to improvementsy in draft rigging for railway cars in which the spring of the draft rigging operates also to center the draw-bar, and more particularly to improvements upon the draft rigging of this kind heretofore patented to me in my Letters Patent No. 829,731 of August 21st. 1890.
The object of my present invention is to simplify and improve the construction of my said patented draft rigging and materially shorten the draw-bar, while securing all the advantages and accomplishing all the results of my previously patented construction.
My Ainvention consists in the novel condevices, and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described, and more particularly specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in central vertical longitudinal section, of a draft rigging having a draw-bar centering mechanism embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig.
' Il is :l central, vertical, longitudinal sectlon on line 3*'3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is avhorizonlal section on line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Figs. 5 and are vertical cross sections on lines 5-5 and (-G of Fig. 3 and Fig. 7 is a detail plan view of the draw-bar centering block.
In the drawings, A represents the center sills or frame pieces of the car to which the side plates or stop castings B of the draft rigging are secured.
C C are tandem arranged springs, D D the followers, E the draw-bar yoke or extension, F the draw-bar, G the draw-bar centering block, H I-I thimble blocks and K K1l the connecting rivets.
The tlrawlmr F is provided with a pair of integral laterally projecting rocker or pivot arms f. one projt-icting to each side of the front rivet K about which as a center the draw-bar turns in its laterally rocking or swinging movements.
.thiinble blocks H The draw-bar cenaV tering block G which is interposed between the rear end of the draw-bar and the front follower- I) is provided on each side with seats or bearings g fitting and engaging the rounded end f of the rocker arms f ofthe draw-bar. V
The draw-bar centering block G is provided. with two longitudinally extending slots or elongated openin s g1 g2 in which fit the thimbles L h1 of te thimble blocks H. H. The draw-bar F is provided with upper and lower pivot ears f2 f3 separated by a horizontal slot f* in which ts the central pivot lug g of the draw-bar centering block G. The pivotears f3 on the draw-bar have circular openings 5 therein in which fit the front thimbles h k of the thimble blocks H H. The front connectin rivet K extends through the draw-bar yo e E and the pivot ears of the draw-brat and throu h the front thimbles h h of the thimble bloc s H H, and also through the pivot lug g3 of the drawbar centering block G, thus oonnecting all these parts. The rear connecting rivet K1 extends throu h the draw-bar strap or yoke E, the rear t imbles k1 klof the H and also through the gf2 of the draw-bar. The draw` block Gr is thus, by the front and rear or double thimbles la h on the thimble blocks H H and the front and rear rivets K K1, directly and immovably connected to the draw-bar yoke E so far as lleL longitudinal movement of the one in respect to the other is concerned, while permitting of a limited lateral play governed by the longitudinal slots in the draw-bar connecting block G. And as the transverse dimension of the front and rear slots g1 g2 equals the diameter of the cylindric thimhles h h1, the block G can have no lateral play in res ect to the yoke E. And at the-same time, tie draw-bar F is pivotally connected to the oke E, as well as to the draw-bar centering lilock Gr and prevented from having any longitudinal movement in respect to the yoke E. And the lengthwise exten in slots g1 g'2 permit the draw-bar centering lock G to have a slight longitudinal movement in respect both to the drawbar and tothe draw-bar yoke under action of the draw-bar spring and front follower so that when the bar swings to one side or rocks laterally, the draw-bar spring will be slightly compressed by reason of the interengagng rocker arms rear opening bar centering IIO j und rocker seats y, und consequently Causes the draw-bnr to be .restored to its central position when tho spring expands.
By this novel eonstrnetion and eoporntive combination of parts, 4l th ns nroid tho noeesi sity of providing any transversely extendingr slots or transversely elongated openingseither in the draw-bnr, tho draw-bnr yoke or in the lol'lgitndinzllly movable draw-bnr centering block, und thereby :ldd materially to the strength :1nd durability of the drnt't rigging ns well :is simplify its Construction.
draft rigging' und drow-bur eentoringY mechanism consisting' in the combination with the draw-bar, drow-bnryoke spring', follower, the draw-bnr being;r provided with lateral rocker arms Iand nppor :ind lower pivot; ears furnished with circular openings 2O through the same, a dranhbnr centering bloel;
haring longitudinal slots through the sznno :nld provided Iwith lnternl seats engaging the rocker arms on tbll draw-bm', n pair of tliin'ible blocks having I'ront and rear thimbles, the front. tlliinbles extending through the pivoty ears ot' the draw-bor and fitting in tho eentrnl pivot lnlLl ot' the drmvlm1centering' bloel; und the renr thimbles onsaid thin'ible blocks fitting in the` reni' slot irl-said draw-bm' centering' bloek` and front; and reni' connecting rivets extending thron h the drn\\'bnryol e und smid thiinbles of t 1e tbilnblo blocks. the portion of tho draw-bar in front ot' said t'ront etnineetingr rivety boing innierfornte `snbstnntinlly :1s speoited.
