GARDEN-HOSE REEL.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ENGBRET BERGLAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garden-Hose lteels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings as constituting a part thereof.

This invention has for its object to obtain a hose-reel conveniently arranged with the view of moving the same about the lawn, and so that the discharge-end of the hose may be permanently attached thereto, and the act of rolling the hose-reel from one place to another shall simultaneously accomplish the winding up and unwinding, as the case may be, of the hose.

To this end my invention comprises a truck, a hollow axle for the wheels, a spigot on the hollow axle to which to attach the end of the hose, a reel arranged to revolve with the wheels, a discharge spigot at one end of the axle, a hose-piece attached to such discharge spigot, and through which to discharge the water, and means for holding the discharge-end of such hose-piece, such holding means being preferably adapted to enable the positioning thereby of the discharge nozzle of the hose, as desired to throw the stream.

Referring now to the letters as designating the parts described: the body of the truck, or carriage, of my reel comprises a frame a, in the side-pieces a of which are journaled the ends of a hollow axle .7). On the ends of said axle are rigidly mounted wheels 0, c, and intermediate of such'wheels is provided a reel 6, comprising cross bars, the ends of which are fastened on the lugs f, therefor provided on the spokes of the wheels. The hollow axle l) is provided with a spigot g, to which to attach the end of the main hose 72. One end of the hollow axle is closed, and the opposite end is provided with a spigot 71, adapted to have a short hose-piece j afixed thereon, through which the water, delivered through the main hose 7L and the hollow axle, is discharged. of the main hose ft is connected to the spigot of the house pipe, as usual. The hose-reel is provided with a handle Z, rigidly aflixed to the frame a, and on such handle is provided a longitudinally adjustable bar 1%.

Extending from the frame a is an apertured arm 02, adapted to have the discharge-end of the hose-piece j inserted therethrough, and the slidable bar m is provided with an apertured arm 0, through which is also inserted the discharge-end of the hose piece j. The bar m has a series of perforations 9, and a pin g is provided to fix the arm m in the place to which adjusted; said arm sliding in guide-straps r, r. Thus, by moving the adjustable bar 4%, forward or back, the elevation of the discharge nozzle is can be regulated to throw the stream of water as desired. The hose will be wound on the reel when nearest the spigot of the house service-pipe, and as the reel is moved away from such position the main hose 71 is correspondingly unwound and relatively lengthened; and on the other hand, when the hose-reel is pulled back, the main hose it will be correspondingly wound up. The short hose-piece y' will readily revolve with the axle. But if desired, the coupling spigot, i, could be made of rotating type, similar to the construction used in rotating lawnsprinklers, the construction of which being well known, it is not necessary to further detail the same. Furthermore the end of the hose-piece j, inserted through the arms a, 0, may be incased by a winding of wire, (not shown) or other suitable material, in accordance with the usual practice, to save said end from wear. The handle Z is provided with a leg 8 to support the same a convenient distance above the ground.

I claim:

1. In a device of the character specified, the combination of a carriage-frame, a handle affixed thereon, a hollow axle and wheels fast on the ends thereof, a spigot on the hollow axle adapted to have a hose-end at tached thereto, one end of such hollow axle being closed and the other adapted to have a hose-end attached thereto, a reel arranged to revolve with the wheels, a short hose-piece attached to the end or dischargespigot of the hollow axle, and a movable arm on the carriage adapted to support the nozzle-end of such short hose-piece, and means on the handle of the carriage and connected with said movable arm whereby to position the ing from the carriage frame and adapted to have the nozzle-end of said short hose-piece 15 inserted there-through, a bar longitudinally slidable on the carriage handle and having an apertured extremity to receive said nozzle-end, so that by the adjustment of said bar said nozzle-end may be positioned as 20 desired.
