Description
F. M. AWALT. PLOWSHABE.
APPLIUATION FILED 1113.10.1908.,

FRANCIS MARION AWALT, OF OHILLlCO'lHE. TEXAS.
PLOWSHARE Application filed February i0, 1903.
Specification ol' Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 3, 1908.
Serial No. 415,183.
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that l, FnANeis M. AWALT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chillicothe, in the county of Hardeman and State of Texas, have invented. certain new and useful improvements in Plowshares, of xrfhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plowshares, and more particularly to the point thereof, the object being to provide a reinforced point to reduce wear, and also a self-sharpening point.
n the accompanying drawings Figure l is a front elevation showing the invention applied to the share of a shovel plow and Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3, and Fig. 4t is a transverse section on the line 4%4 of Fig. 2.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 5 denotes a plow shovel of the usual outline, the lower side edges being sharpened as in dicated at 6 and tapering to a point. YWith the exceptions hereinafter noted the shovel does not differ from the ordinary ones.
The point of the shovel is reinforced by increasing the thickness of the adjacent portion of the blade. The sides '7 of the reinforcement coincide with the tapering side edges of the blade and join at the point of the blade to forin a substantially vertical cutting edge 8. The upper surface of the reinforcelnent innnediately behind the upper end of the cutting edge S is convex as indicated at 9 and said convex portion inerges with the inain body-portion of the blade. The cross section of the reinforcement immediately adjacent the point is triangular as shown in Fig. 3, the sides 7 of the reinforcement forining the sides of the triangle and nierging with the outer portions of the convex surface 9.
Reinforcing the point as herein. described gives it a greater ainount of metal and enables it to withstand greater wear. lt can also be tempered to any degree of hardness, and the shape of the point Amakes it selfsharpening.
ln the drawings the invention is shown in connection with the share of a shovel-plow but it is to be understood that cultivator points, lister shares, sweeps etc., inay be siinilarly constructed, and l do not wish to be liinited to the particular forin of plowshare illustrated. rlChe amount of reinforcenient may be varied to suit the size of the share.
l olaiin:
A plowshare having its lower side edges tapered to a point, said point being reinforced by thickening it, the sides of the reinforcement coinciding with the tapering side edges of the blade and ineeting at the point te forni a substantially vertical cutting edge, the upper surface of the reinforcen'ient behind the upper end of said cutting edge being convex and inerging with the main bodyportion of the share.
ln testimony whereof l affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS MARlO'N ANALT.
