Specification of Letters Patent.

' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. PAYNE, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Ball- Valves for Tater-Closets, of which the following' is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view illustrating my invention and showing the valve in its closed position; Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same, and F ig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line IIIIII of Fig. 2 illustrating my invention and showing the valve in its open position.
Like symbols of reference indicate like parts wherever they occur.
The object of my invention is to swivel the valve casing and to make it detachable from the nipple and also to combine the umbrella and the refill orifice with the removable bracket which carries the valve.
I will now describe my invention so that others skilled in the art may manufacture and use the same.
In the drawing 2 represents a portion of the bottom of the tank, and 3 represents the tank nipple which is provided with a threaded extension l which couples with the usual screw socket on the end of the inlet pipe, which socket and pipe are not shown in the drawings as they form no part of my invention.
Extending from the upper face of the tank nipple 3, within the tank 2, is a raised valve seat 5, against the mouth of which the washer 6a of the plunger valve 6 rests when the valve is in its closed position. This washer, which is preferably of greater area than the mouth of the valve seat, is seated in a recess in the lower face of the plunger G and the plunger' is provided with a cupshaped depending wall 8a, which serves to deflect the water toward the ports 8 and prevents the water from passing up between the valve plunger' and the wall of the valve chamber, thus dispensing with packing. Extending upwardly from the flange of the nipple 3 is the short tube 7 which forms the valve chamber or casing. At the bottom of this tube 7 are outlet ports 8 which permit the outflow of the water from the mouth of the valve seat 5 into the tank 2. At the top of the plunger of the valve 6 is the post 9 having a vertical slot through which loosely passes the lever arm 10, which, at one end, is pivoted to the upright arm 11, which extends from the swivel collar 12 and at the other end engages with the jaws 13 of the ball lever 111, which lever is pivoted to an upright arm 15 extending from the swivel collar 12, from the opposite side occupied by the arm 11. This swivel collar 12 has an interior seat 16 which rests on an annular' shoulder' 17, extending from the tube 7 above the ports 8. Extending from the base of the collar 12 is the annular umbrella 18.
For the purpose of securing the collar 12 to the tube 7 on the end of the tank nipple 3, I employ a crown-nut 19, which is interiorly threaded and engages with an exterior thread on the tube 7, and is also provided with an interior, annular collar 20 which, when the crown-nut is screwed to the tube 7 acts as a stop against the end of the tube and prevents the crown-nut from so binding on the collar 12 as to interfere with its swivel movement. Extending from the umbrella 18 of the collar 12 is the refill socket 21 for the reception of the refill pipe 22, which refill pipe is secured to the socket by the set screw 23.
The operation of my improved ball valve is as follows: The inlet nipple having been secured in the bottom of the tank 2, by the usual screw washer 25 and the flange y26 bearing on opposite sides of the bottom of the tank 2, the tubing 7 extending upward in the tank above the raised valve seat 5;
the collar or bracket 12 carrying the valve 6, the lever arm 10, and the ball lever 111, is fitted on the outside of the tube 7, the valve 6 passing within the tube 7, and the packing of the valve resting on the raised valve seat 5. The crown-nut 19 is then screwed down on the exterior thread of the tube 7 which secures the collar 12 without interfering with its swivel movement. The4 purpose of the swivel movement is to permit the ball to swing freely in the tank and to avoid any possibility of its being so held against the sides of the tank as to prevent the free movement of the ball, which sometimes happens with the old forms of valve, when they are improperly adjusted. The refill pipe 22 may be secured in the socket 21 either before or after the valve 6 has been seated and secured. When it is desired to remove the nut 19 can be unscrewed from the thread of the tube 7 Without the use of tools and the swivel bracket carrying` the valve, the float-ball and refill pipe may be lifted out of the tank Without interfering with the connection between the tank and tank nipple.
The advantages of my invention, which result from the construction hereinbefore described Will be appreciated by those skilled in the art.
Although I have described certain specific devices for securing` the valve and for supporting` the lever arms and refill pipe, I do not desire to limit myself thereto, as changes in these parts Will, from the foregoing description, readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.
Having thus described my invention, what claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of a tank nipple, a loose collar having an umbrella and adapted to carry the valve, the valve lever, and ball le ver, and devices for holding the collar loosely on the tank nipple.
