To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS O. BEST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usen ful Improvements in Boiler-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.l
My invention relates to boiler hangers; and has for its object to provide an improved boiler hanger containing the maximum strength and providing a convenient means for connecting the boiler hanging de vices to the boiler.
To this end my invention consists in the combinations and details hereinafter set forth and claimed. i
In the accompanying drawings-Figure l is a front elevation of a boiler showing my improved hanger in position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view on the line 3 of Fig. 2.
In carrying out my invention I provide a flanged plate of n-shape, the flanges being curved to conform to the curvature of the boiler. These flanges are provided around their inner edges with ribs b, which, of course, also in the example shown, assume the form of n. These ribs may, if so desired, be spaced apart-as shown in Fig. 2- and are provided near their upper ends with perforations through which passes a rod l which is thus detachably secured in the upper ends of the ribs. The metal connecting the ribs at their upper ends is cut away to form a passageway c for the reception of a hanger rod c, which is shown as provided at one end with an eye c for the reception of the rod (Z. The ribs are thus connected at their extremities by the remaining strip of metal c. The hanger rods e serve to support the boilers from the usual framework f. It will be observed that in my improved hanger the width of the end e of the boiler supporting rod c is such as to distribute the strain upon the bolt connecting the rod with the ribs on the plate. The shearing strain to which the bolt is subjected consequently occurs on the outer sides of the lower end of the rod and the danger of the bolt being bent is consequently minimized.
I have provided a hanger which may be readily pressed from sheet metal which com` bines the maximum strength with the greatest efficiency and with the greatest ease of connection to the boiler and to the hanger rods. lith this form of construction also,
it will be observed that a single straight hanger rod or chain may be used instead of the usual n-shaped rods necessitated by the form of hangers now commonly in use.
It will be, of course, understood that in marine practice the hangers an-d the supporting rods may be connected to the boiler below the medial line thereof, so as to attach the boiler securely to the hull of the boatm that is to say, boilers in this case instead of being hung from an overhead support are tied down to the boat.
While I have shown and described one form of my invention, I do not desire to be understood as limiting my invention to this specific form, but reserve the right to make such changes as fall within the scope of my invention, as defined in the following claims.
I claim:
l. A boiler hanger comprising a plate adapted to be secured to a boiler shell, spaced strengthening ribs on said plate, and a boiler supporting means extending between and connected to said ribs.
2. A boiler hanger comprising a plate adapted to be secured to a boiler shell, spaced strengthening ribs on said plate, and a rod for supporting the boiler extending between and connected to said ribs.
3. A boiler hanger comprising a plate adapted to be secured to a boiler shell, spaced strengthening ribs on said plate, a web connecting said ribs, and a boiler supporting means extending through said web and secured between said ribs.
4. A boiler hanger comprising a plate adapted to be secured to a boiler shell, spaced strengthening ribs on. said plate, a transverse web connecting said ribs, and a rod for supporting the boiler extending through said web and secured between said ribs.
5. A boiler hanger comprising an fl-shaped flanged plate provided with parallel longitudinal ribs said ribs being provided with perforations at one end, a rod detachably mounted in the perforations, and a supporting nut attached to the rod, substantially as described.
6. A boiler hanger comprising a pair of walls having alining perforations, a web integral with and connecting said walls, a boiler supporting means extending between said walls, and a transverse connecting device extending through the perforations in said walls and through the interposed boiler supporting means, whereby the shearing strain on the Connecting` device odeurs at the outer sides oli' the boiler supporting ineans.
7. A boiler hanger comprising an ['1- shaped plate adapted to be secured to a boiler shell, ribs projecting outwardly from parallel edges of said plate, anda boiler supporting nieans extending between and connected to said ribs.
8. A boiler hanger Comprising` an ['1- shaped plate adapted to be secured to a boiler shell, ribs projecting outwardly from the inner edges of the :members of said plate, and a boiler supporting,` means extending between and connected to said ribs.
9. AV boiler hanger consisting of a plate adapted tovbe: seeured to a boiler shell, said plate Comprising parallel portions having alining perforations therethrough and a web connecting said parallel portions, a boiler supporting rod extending between said parallel portions, and a connecting device eX- tending transversely through the perforations in said parallel portions and through the interposed boiler supporting rod.
