ALEXANDER E. WISE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IRONING-TABLE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 6, 1908.
Application filed March 18, 1908. Serial No. 421,921.
To aLL whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER E. WISE, a cltizen of the United States, residingin the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing.
Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My improvements relate to ironing boards or tables, and are designed-to afford a simple inexpensive device which may be used as an ordinary kitchen table or the like, and which is readily convertible to constitute an ironing board afl'ording exceptional advantages of convenience and ease in the sup )ort and manipulation of shirts, skirts and other body garments.
The invention consists in the specific construction and arrangement of parts herein-' after described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figural, is an isometrical view of my device adapted for use as an ordinary kitchen table; Fig. 2,
is an elevation of what may be designated as the right hand end of the table; Fig. 3, a sectional detail on plane of line 3-3 Fig.
2 Fig. 4, a section upon plane of line 44- Fig. 8; Fig. 5, a horizontal section taken upon plane of line 55 Fig. 2, looking upward; Fig. 6, a sectional elevation upon plane of line 66- Fig. 9; Fig. 7, is an isometrical view of the device arranged for use as an ironing board; F ig. 8, is a view of the under side of the device thus arranged; Fig. 9, is a horizontal section upon a plane corre spending to line 5--5' Fig. 2, looking upward and showing the parts as in Figs. 7, 8; Fig. 10, is a sectional detail showing one of the bolts; Fig. 11, a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. 10; Fig. 12, is a vertical section taken upon plane of line 12, 12, Fig.
device a, as the screw bolt a, and clau'iping nut a, shown in detail in Fig. 4.
The center board 0, 1s lunged to what may be designated herein for the purpose of distinction as the stationary upright A,the other or extension upright A being the one that is usually adjusted toward or from the aforesaid stationary upright A.
' c, is a flap or extension hinged to the outer end of the center board 0. When the parts are retracted as in Fig. 1, this extension hangs down parallel to the upright A, but when the latter is drawn out as in Fig. 7, the flap 0, rests upon the top of said extension upright A, and is held thereto by a fastening 0 as for instance a hook and eye or equivalent device. A bracket A, on the standard. A, also supports the flap 0, when the parts are extended, said bracket extending inward a sufiicient distance to overlap the joint between the center board 0, and said flap c, as shown in Fig. 6, thereby relieving the hinges of unnecessary strain.
The parts 0 and c, are locked in their extended position by a bolt 1) on one part, entering a mortise in the other as shown in Fig. 10. A spring 8, on the stationary standard A, tends constantly to raise the center board 0, and its extension 0, and does so to a certain extent when the fastening c", is loos,- ened, thereby facilitating the insertion or removal of askirt or other garment.
d, is a shelf on the extension bar a, for the support of the under'portion of a skirt or the like, when the upper ortion' thereof is being ironed. It-also affor s a convenient support for articles generally when the device is used as a table, as in Fig. 1.
The lon itudinal side leaves 0, e, are hinged to t e center board 0, and when fold-' ed are held thereunder by a button f, the ends of which fit in grooves 6, (see Fig.1) in the edges of the leaves 0, e. The latter are held in extended position by swingin cross bar's g, g, as will be understood by re erence to Fig. 5. These cross bars are connected by pivots (1, g, with the-respective standards A, A, and are each formed with a longitudinal slot 9 (see Fig. 2) so that when-not in use they may be swung down pcrpemlicularly, out of the way, as in Fig. 7.
The two isometrical views Figs. 1 and 7, illustrate the adaptability of my device to ditlcrent uses. It is especially appropriate where economy of space is a desideratum, as in city apartments.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In a table of the character designated, the combination of the end standards formed with interlocking extension tiara means for securing said extension bars rigidly together, a center board hinged to one and standard, an extension flap hinged to said center board, means for supporting said flap in its extended lio position, a s ring under said center board arran ed to t rust it upward and means for holding said center board in position against the resistance of said spring, for the purpose described.
2. In a table of the character desi nated, the combination of the end standards ormed with interlocking extension bars, means for securing said extension bars rigidly together, a center board hinged to-qne end standard, an extension flap hinged to said center board, a bracket upon the other-end standard arranged to su 'port said flap when extended, side leaves liinged to said center board, means for sup iorting said side leaves when folded under t e'center board and means for supporting said side leaves in their extended position, for the pur ose described.
' '3. In a table of t e character designated the combination of the end standards forme Withinterlooking extension bars, means for securing said extension bars rigidly together, a shelf attached to one of said extension bars, a center board hinged 'to one end standard, side leaves hinged to said center board, means for'supporting said side leaves when folded under the center board, and means for upporting said side leaves in their extended pos tions, for the urpose described.
4. In a table 0 the. character desi ated, the ,cornbinationfof the end standards ormed with interlocking extension bars, means for securing said extension bars rigidly together, a center board hinged to one end standard, side leaves hinged to said center board, means for supporting said side leaves when folded under the center board, and means for supporting said side leaves in their extended position consisting of slotted cross bars pivotally supported upon the standards and adapted to hang vertically when not in use, substantially in the manner and for the pur pose described.
5. In a table of the character desi mated the combination of the end standards iormed with interlocking extension bars, means for securing said extension bars rigidly together, a shelf attached to one of said extension bars, a center board hinged to one end standard, an extension flap hinged to said center board, a bracket on the other end standard arranged to su port the flap in its extended osition, side eaves hinged to said center oard, means for supportmg said side leaves when folded under the center board, and means for supporting said side leaves in their extended positions, substantially in the manner and for the pur ose described. 7 AL XANDER E.
