UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. KIESSLING AND NIGKLAUS KIESSLING, OF BLUE ISLAND, ILLINOIS.
PORTABLE: REED-ORGAN.
No. 909,91 1. Specification of Application filed May 21, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, lVILLIAM J. Kinse- LING and NIOKLAUS KmssLINe, citizens of the United States, residing at Blue Island, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Reed Organs, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates broadly to organs and particularly contemplates the provision of an improved folding organ box, including an organ reed action and its parts suitable to such a box and of improved construction in itself over those previously devised.
Our invention specifically resides in the following features of construction; arrangement and operation as hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved organ in the closed position, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the case operating levers, Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view illustrating the fall board lock, Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view through the organ case and action in the open or operative position, Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the air cells, the reeds and the tone regulating mutes, Fig. 6 is a detail vertical sectional view of the suction device and showing the air reservoir in the folded and distended position, Fig. 7 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 77 of Fig 6, and, Fig. 8 is a detail sectional view illustrating the mute levers and swell lever located adjacent the left hand end of the action.
In the practical embodiment of our invention we provide a telescopingcasing comprising the inner and outer sections 1 and 2 respectively. The entire action is carried within the inner section 1, which may be raised, with the exception of the operating pedals 3 hinged at 4t to the vase of section 2. The case section 1 is further provided with an operating push rod 5 projecting through the top thereof and connected to an operated plate 6 pivotally mounted inside said section in such manner that the downward movement of said lever will rotate said plate on its pivot. On the ends of said section 1 and inside the same are pro vided the inverted U-shaped locking rods 7 mounted in brackets 11 and having angularly extending ends 8 projecting through openings in the section 1 and adapted also to project through upper and lower sets of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 374,898.
Patented Jan. 19,1909.
The case when closed and locked may be carried from place to place by means of handles 14 of any suitable form, one attached to the section 1 and the other attached upon the fall board 15 in such manner as to support the same in an unright position when opened. The fall board 15 is hinged at 16 in the top of said section 1 and adapted to be locked thereto by the spring pressed sliding bolts 17 having an operating piece 18 for unlocking the same as shown particularly in Fig. 3. lVithin the sections 1 and 2 are arranged flexible strips 19 attached to the lower portions of each of the sections for limiting the upward movement of section 1 to prevent the same being entirely withdrawn.
Within the inner telescoping section 1 is arranged a music rack 20 below which are mounted the keys 21 upon the cross bar 22 of frame 23. Depending from the keys 21, and mounted through the sounding board 24: are the tracker pins 25 resting upon the valves 26 normally pressed upward against the sounding board 24C and over the reer openings therein by means of the springs 27 extending from the rail 28. Above the reeds 29 are located the reed cells 30 opening at 31 into the air cells 32 said reed and air cells being closed by the mutes 33, 34:, 35 and 36. The front mutes 33 and 34 are operated as desired by levers 37 and 38 respectively, which levers are pivotally mounted in the key frame 23 at the left hand end of the case and connected to said mutes by rods 39, as shown in Fig. 8. A lever 40 is also pivoted in said key frame 23 at the left hand end of the organ and is used to operate the swell 4:1 by means of a connecting rod 42. In like manner the mutes 35 and 36 may be operated by the levers 4:3 and 44 pivotally mounted in the key frame 23 at the right hand end of case and connected to their respective Inutes by connecting rods 45. Thus the inutes may be readily and easily operated to produce variable sounds. When the swell and selected ones of the mutes are opened and the keys operated to open valve 26, air will be sucked in and down through the reeds into the ai rcell 46, through the throat 47 and into the air reservoir 48, under the actuation of the feeder 49 operated by the webbing strips 50 attached to the pedals 3 and arranged over rollers 51. hen operated by the depression of the pedals 3 the feeder 49 sucks the air from the reservoir 48 through the registering openings 52 in said feeder and said reservoir having suitable valves, which in turn creates a suction within the said reservoir to draw the air through the reeds as described.
It will be seen that we provide the reservoir 48 with flexible folding sides 53 having wooden strips 54 attached thereto to guide the folding in such manner that when the sections 1 and 2 of the case are telescoped to close the same the said reservoir 49 will fold to admit of the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim:
In a portable reed organ of the character described, a casing comprising an outer base section, and an inner section telescopingly mounted within said outer section, means for locking said inner section in the inner and outerpositions, reed action carried by said inner section, a fall board hingedly mounted within the upper end of said inner section, releasable means for locking said fall board in the closed position, and handles secured to the upper portion of said inner casing, and to said fall beard, and arranged to support said fall board in an upright position when opened, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
