To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN Dnr and ALEX- ANDER DEY, residing at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Time-Recorders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to time recorders.
One of the objects thereof is to provide a practical and highly efficient time recorder capable of forming records of a character adapted for the most rapid and convenient use.
Another object is to provide an instrument of the above nature of the dial type.
Another object is to provide means of the above character of simple construction and accurate and reliable action.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts, which will be exemplified in the embodiment hereinafter described and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown one of various possible embodiments of the invention, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation thereof. Fig. 2 is a side view of certain parts shown in Fig. 1, the same appearing isolated from the remainder of the instrument. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of locking mechanism shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar view of controlling mechanism shown in Fig. 2.

ihis invention will be most readily and thoroi'ghly understood if the following facts are borne in mind. With a time recorder in which the regular and irregular individual records are printed in the same type and the same color, it is difficult to detect quickly the presence of irregular records, and this step often reqrires the carefrl perusal of the entire record surface. In the case of workmens time records, the tardy arrival or early leaving of the individual workmen must be noted and it will readily be seen that, with a large 1 in the examination of the records.
number of individual records, unless the irregularities can be quickly detected, a considerable amount of time and labor is consumed It may also be noted that in time recorder instruments, those of the well-known dial type, or variations thereof, are, in many respects, by far the most efficient in the performance of their functions. This invention with regard to certain dominant features thereof, deals with the provision of means, in connection with instruments of this desirable type of instrument, for doing away with the abovenoted defects.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings, there is shown in Fig. 1 a casing 1 within which is journaled at one end a shaft 2 provided with hearings in the main frame 3 of the instrument. Fixed upon this shaft is a cross arm 4 to which is pivoted a lever 5 passing through a guide slot 6 and provided upon its outer end with a pin 7 adapted to co-act with openings 8 in the fixed dial 9. These parts are in themselves of well-known construction and it may here be noted that the term "dial as used throughout this specification and the following claims is used to denote a member corresponding in function or general intent with this member 9.
Upon shaft 2 is fixed a drum 10, shown in detail in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and having secured thereabout, as by the spring clip 11, a record-receivin member 12, the surface of which is divided circumferentially into a large number of columns 13, each corresponding to the individual record of one workman and being so related to the parts co-acting therewith as to be placed in operative position with the pin 7 opposite the opening 8 corresponding to the workman in question. The record-receivim member is also divided transversely into the longitudinal columns 14 which may be used to denote the several periods of the day, as the entry of the workman in the morning and his exit at noon.
Driven by suitable clockwork 15 is a shaft 16 flexibly connected, as at 17, with a shaft 18 journaled in an auxiliary frame 19. This shaft has fixed thereon a printing wheel 20 preferably designed to print the minutes, and from this wheel is driven in any desired manner an hour type wheel 21 mounted in the frame 19, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Interposed between the printing- wheels 20 and 21 and record-receivingmember 1-2 is a. printing-ribbon 56, ntounted, upon the spools 57 and 53,;slidably mounted, as by sleeves59, upon the member 60 of the auxiliary frame 19. Thisribbon is, in thisernbodiment of my invention, of the multicolored type and preferably comprisesja red portion 61 and a. green portion 62, each of 1 such width as in itself to render theprinthsm ehe ism t e y per v i g l In accordance with certain more specific features of this invention, it is proposed to so shift this ribbon as to bring a predetermined one of the colored portions thereof into operative relation to the printing wheels during working hours, and at all other times to maintain the remaining portion of the ribbon in such condition as to render any impression made within such times of a color corresponding to this part.
' hor example, if the color green be used to denote the arrival of the workman on time and his proper departure after working hours, this color is to be brought into such relation with the printing mechanism as to a corresponding record, and, if the remaining color, as red, is to indicate a tardy arrival or early departure, the ribbon is to be so shifted as to evidence these irregular records in such manner.
The shifting of the ribbon is brought about by the sw inging of a member 63 pivoted, as at 64, in one side portion 65 of the carriage 26. Member 63 is connected, as by straps 66 and 6 7, with sleeves 59 upon. which the ribbon spools are mounted, and alsowith the guides 68 which serve to hold the ribbon in proper condition. It will thus be seen that upon the member 63 being oscillated about its pivot 64, the ribbon 56 will be shifted laterally in the desired manner. The oscillation of member 63 is brought about by the engagement of the bar 46 w ith one of the abutments 69 and. 70 respectively, formed upon the ends of a small pivot plate 71 upon a support 72 pivoted within the portion 65 of the carriage and having a slotted connection with the member 63. Thus, if the parts be in the position shown in Fig.4 of the drawings, if bar 46 be depressed it w ill tend to engage the abutment 70 and force the same downwardly, if it be above the lower limit of the path of travel of the bar. This, of course, would occasion a swinging of the support 7 2 and the member 63, w ith a consequent lateral shifting of the ribbon. If, however, abutment 70 has already been depressed, it will be unali'ected by the downward movement of the bar 46 upon the same forcing the printing mechanism into recordforming position. Such condition of affairs is shown in Fig. 4, in whichit w ill be noted that the abutment 70 is already depressed so as to rock member 63 to bring the red portion of the ribbon into operative relation to the printing wheels.
The controlof the plate 71 whereby the of the ribbon is brought about, is accomplished by a wiper 73 resting upon the outer surface of a cam disk 74 driven from the clock by such gearing as to adapt it to rotate once during a certain predetermined period of time, as twenty-four hours. lhe wiper 73 being spring-pressed against the outer surface of this cam disk will tend to fall into the depressions 75 formed thereon and corresponding to the working hours. Upon resting in such depressed portions, it will so position the plate 71, as by a lever 76 and link 77 connecting the same therewith, as to cause the bar -16 upon actuation to throw the ribbon into a position with the red portion opposite the printing wheels under the above assumption as to colors. If the ribbon already occupies this position the same will of course be unaffected by the depression of the bar, as above noted. If, however, the wiper 73 be riding upon the raised portions of the cam disk, it will, being rocked about its axis, so swing the lever 7 6 which is fast therewith as to oscillate the plate 71 into such position as to insure the positioning of the green portion of the ribbon opposite the printing mechanism. It will thus be seen that upon the instrument being operated during working hours, as by a tardy workman or one who is leaving before the proper time, a red impression will be made giving evidence of his irregular record; but if the actuation occurs out of working hours, when the wi er 7 3 is riding upon the raised portions of tie cam disk, a green impression will result, denoting the fact that the workman has been at labor during the entire prescribed time.
In order to insure accuracy of operation of the above-described mechanism, which fac tor attains considerable importance in view of the fact that workmen generally arrive or depart close to the prescribed times and yet without the exact hours of labor, the following means are preferably employed.
Disk 74 is provided with pins 78 of such disposition as to co-act with a locking lever 79 substantially of the shape shown. This lever is journaled within the auxiliary frame 19, as best shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and is fast upon a shaft 80 provided with a depending release arm 81 adapted to co-act with pins 82 formed upon the minute wheel of the printing mechanism. As locking lever 79 is spring-pressed into depressed position, it will engage the pins 7 8 as they are rotated in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 4 of the drawings, and will temporarily arrest the movement of the disk, such action occurring just previous to the shifting of the wiper lever from a raised to a depressed portion of the cam surface or the reverse. '1 he temporary stopping of the disk 74: is brought about without effect upon the remainder of the clock-driven mechanism inasmuch as the same is driven from gear 83 through a spiral spring 84- adapted to permit a slight relative movement of these parts.
Precisely at the instant of time at which the ribbon is to be set in condition for shifting at the next actuation of the instrument, the proper pin 82 engages the release arm 81 and swings up the spring-pressed locking arm 7 9 to release the pin '7 8 held thereby, and permits the disk 7 4 to snap forward, thus bringing the Wiper arm 78 instantly into operative relation to the next portion of the disk.
The operation of the above-described embodiment of my invention is substantially as follows: The record receiving member 12 being properly secured upon the drum 10, the instrument is in condition for use in a manner generally known with relation to dial machines. This operation comprises, in brief, the swinging of the actuating arm 5 untilthe pin '7 is opposite the opening 8 corresponding to the workman using the machine, which will position the column devoted to his record opposite the printing point, and the subsequent depression of the arm toward the machine causing the pin to enter this opening, thus throwing the printing wheels toward the record-receiving member and forming the impression in the manner above described. The lateral shifting of the printing mechanism with relation to the drum is brought about, in this embodiment, as above described, by the swinging of the crank 44 which, through the gearing set forth, shifts the belt 30 and slides the carriage 26 along the parts upon which it is mounted.
The plate 71 is so positioned as, prior ,to working hours, to cause the impressions to be formed in a color indicating a regular record, as green, but just prior to the beginning of the hour of labor the disk 74 is locked by the arm 79 with the wiper arm 73 on thev verge of one of the depressed portions of the cam. This locking, of course, does not atfect the ribbon-shifting mechanism and the action of the clock causes the gear 83 to advance slightly, such movement being permitted by sprin 84, as above set forth. At the instant at which the hours of labor commence, however, the pin 78 is released, as above described, permitting spring 83 to snap forward the cam disk 74 and bring a depressed portion thereof opposite the wiper. The latter part will thus fall into the depression and swing the plate 71 in such manner as, upon the instrument being subsequently actuated, to cause a shifting of the ribbon to change the color of the next impression. It will thus be seen that there is provided apparatus in which the several objects of the invention are fulfilled, and that this apparatus is of an essentially simple, inexpensive and efficient character.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the lane guage used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements as to the scope of the invention, which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a time recorder, in combination, an impression surface, a carriage movable across said surface, marking means carried by the carriage, means to bring the impression surface and the marking means in printing contact, a ribbon mechanism mounted on and moving bodily with the carriage, said mechanism having movement independently of the carriage to shift the ribbon laterally between the impression surface and the marking means.
2. In a time recorder, in combination, an impression surface, a carriage movable across said surface, marking means carried by the carriage, means to bring the impression surface and the marking means in printcontact, a ribbon mechanism mounted on and moving bodily with the carriage, said mechanism having movement independently of the carriage to shift the ribbon laterally between the impression surface and the marking means, and means to shift the ribbon mechanism relative to the carriage.

4. In a time recorder, in combination, time-controlled marking devices, a recordholding drum, a dial, means co-acting with said dial and operatively connected with and adapted to move said record-holding drum, a member slowly driven by clockwork and a second member more rapidly driven from said clockwork, and means adapted to vary the character of the record formed by said marking devices, said first-mentioned member being adapted to set said varying means in operative condition and said second-mentioned member being adapted to determine the time of such setting.
5. In a time recorder, in combination, time-controlled marking devices, a recordholding drum, a dial, means co-acting with said dial and opcratively connected with and adapted to move said record-holding drum, a multi-colored printing ribbon adapted to travel in operative relation to said marking devices, manually-actuated means adapted to shift said printing ribbon with reference to said marking devices and bring a portion of different color into operative position, a clockdriven member controlling said shifting means, means adapted to lock said clockdriven member, and a part clock-driven at a higher rate of speed adapted to release said locking means.
6. In a time recorder, in combination, time-controlled marking devices, a recordholding drum, a dial, means co-acting with said dial and operatively connected with and adapted to move said record-holding drum, means adapted to vary the character of the records formed by said marking devices, a member adapted to control said varying means, a member provided with irregularities adapted to engage said first-mentioned member and move the same, means adapted to lock said second-mentioned member, and a clock-driven member adapted to release the same.
7. In a time recorder, in combination, time-controlled marking devices, a recordholding drum, a dial, means co-acting with said dial and operatively connected with and adapted to move said record-holding drum, a multi-colored printing ribbon adjacent said marking devices, means adapted to shift said printing ribbon and bring a portion thereof into operative relation to said marking devices of different color from that last in such relation, a clock-driven disk having irregu larities in its surface, a lever adapted to engage said disk and be moved in accordance with the position and extent of said irregularities, a connection between said lever and said shifting means, locking means adapted to lock said disk upon the same reaching certain predetermined positions, and a clockdriven member having parts adapted to engage and release said locking means.
8. In a time recorder, in combination,
time-controlled printing mechanism, means adapted to support a record-receiving member, means adapted to secure said recordreceiving member upon said supporting means, a dial and operating means operatively connected with said supporting means and co-acting with said dial adapted to move the record-receiving member to bring a portion thereof devoted to the record of a redetermined workman opposite said printing mechanism, means under control of said operating means whereby records of different classes are made by marks having distinguishing characteristics, means adapted to lock said last-mentioned means, and timecontrolled means adapted to release the same.
9. In a time recorder, an impression surface, a carriage movable transversely of said surface, marking means carried by said carriage, means to bring the impression surface 'erally with respect to its direction of travel in and marking imeans in printing frelatiorr, a multi-color ribbon mechanism mounted on and movable bodily with the carriage, said mechanism having movement independently of the carriage into a plurality of positions whereby to shift the ribbon laterally between the im ression surface'andthe marking means to bring different colors of the ribbon singly into printing position.
10. In a time recorder, in combination, time-controlled printing mechanism, means adapted to support a record-receiving mem ber, means adapted to secure said record-receiving member upon said supporting means, a dial and operating means operatively connected with said supporting means and co acting with said dial adapted to move the record-receiving member to bring a portion thereof devoted to the record of a predetermined workman opposite said printing mechanism, means under control of said operating means adapted to vary the character of the matter printed, a member driven slowly by clockwork and adapted to control the actuation of said last-mentioned means, and a relatively fast moving member adapted to controlsaid slow movingrmember.

In a time recorder, in combination, time-controlled marking devices, a recordholding drum, a dial, means co-acting with said dial and operatively connected with and adapted to move said record-holding drum, a multi-colored printing ribbon adapted to travel in operative relation to said marking devices, said ribbon beingmounted movably in a lateral direction with respect to itsdire'ction of travel, and a single means" adapted to throw said marking devices to said printing ribbon laterally so as tobring a portion thereof of different color into operative position.
18. In a time recorder, in combination, time-controlled marking devices, a recordholding drum, a dial, operating means coacting with said dial and operatively connected with and adpated to move said record-holding drum, a multi-colored printing ribbon between said marking devices and said record-holding drum, and automatic clock-actuated means adapted to control mechanism acted upon by said operating means for shifting said ribbon laterally so as to change the color of the portion thereof in operative relation to said marking devices.
19. In a time recorder, in combination, time-controlled marking devices, a record holding drum, a dial, operating means coacting with said dial and operatively connected with and adpated to move said record holding drum, manually actuated means adapted to throw said marking devices toward said record-holding drum to form an impression, and automatic timecontrolled means acting in conjunction with said operating means adapted to cause the impressions made by said marking devices during different predetermined intervals of time to appear in different colors.
20. In a time recorder, in combination, time-controlled marking devices, a recordholding drum, a dial, operating means coacting with said dial and operatively connected with and adapted to move said record-holding drum, manually actuated means adapted to throw said marking devices toward said record-holding drum to form an impression, and automatic means acting in conjunction with said operating means whereby the impressions of different classes are made in colors distinctive of said classes.
21. In a time recorder, in combination, time-controlled marking devices, a recordholding drum, a dial, operating means 00- acting with said dial and operatively connected with and adapted to move said record holding drum, manually actuated means under control of said operating means adapted to throw said marking devices toward said record-holding drum to form a record, and automatic means acting in conjunction with said operating means whereby records of regular and of irregular character are made by marks having distinguishing characteristics.
22. In a time recorder, an impression surface, a carriage movable transversely of said surface, marking means carried by said carriage, means to bring the impression surface and marking means into printing relation, means whereby said marking meansis adapted to print records having different distinguishing characteristics, means on' the car riage for determining the distinguishing character of the impression, and means to actuate the marking means.
23. In a time recorder, an impression surface, a carriage movable transversely of said surface, marking means carried by said carriage, means to bring the impression surface and marking means into printing relation, means whereby said marking means is adapted to print records having different distinguishing characteristics, means on the carriage for determining the distinguishing character of the impression, means to actuate the marking means, and manually operated means independent of said actuating means to shift the carriage.

In a time recorder, in combination, time-controlled printing mechanism, means adapted to support a record receiving member, manuallyactuated means having mounted thereon said printing mechanism adapted to move relative to the frame of the instrument to throw said printing mechan ism toward the record-receiving member, a multi-colored printing ribbon mounted upon said manually-actuated means, means adapted to shift said printing ribbon laterally to bring a portion of a different color opposite said printing mechanism, a clock-actuated member provided with irregularities, means co-acting with said irregularities and con trolling said shifting means, a relatively fast moving clock-driven member controlling said first-mentioned clock-driven member, a dial, means connected with said record-holding means and adapted to rotate the same, and an actuating lever mounted upon said lastmentioned means and co-acting with said dial to determine the position of the recordreceiving member.

In a time recorder, in combination, printing mechanism, means adapted to hold a record-receiving member, means supporting said printing mechanism adapted to be thrown toward. the record-receiving member, manually-actuated means adapted to throw said last-mentioned means, a multi-colored printing ribbon between said printing mechanism and record-receiving member, a swinging member adapted upon actuation to shift said printing ribbon laterally to bring a portion of different color opposite said printing mechanism, means connected with said swinging member and adapted upon being set in operative condition to project Within the path of travel of said manuallyactuated means, clock-controlled means controlling the position of said last-mentioned means, a dial, means connected with said record-holding means and adapted to rotate the same, and an actuating lever mounted upon said last-mentioned means and co-acting with said dial to determine the position of the record-receiving member.

In a time recorder, in combination, an impression surface, a carriage shiftable transversely thereof, printing mechanism on the carriage, means for bringing the printing and impression surfaces into printing relation, a multi-color ribbon mechanism pivoted on the carriage to swing across the impression surface, and manually operated means for swinging said mechanism into a plurality of positions with reference to such surface to bring any one of the ribbon colors between the printing mechanism and the impression surface.
