RULING MECHANISM.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BwiGr-rr W. CUsTER, a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ruling Mechanism; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My this application being a division of application Serial N o. 331,809 filed by me August 23rd, 1906, for improvements in automatic multiplex press, the object of the invention being to provide improved means for ruling one or both sides of a sheet and perforating said sheet, and the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of a printing cylinder. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the shell removed. Fig. 3 is a view of a rule supporting shell. Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are views in cross section of Figs. l, 2 and 3 respectively, and Fig. 7 is an enlarged view in longitudinal section illustrating the parts assembled.
28 represents a printing cylinder having longitudinal grooves for the attachment of printing plates when used.
32 represents a segmental rule supporting shell, this shell being made with annular webs, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 and provided with longitudinal grooves to receive the rules 34 or perforators 37, the annular webs serving as braces for the rules or perforators to give to them the necessary rigidity to maintain the rules or perforators straight. In assembling the parts, the grooves in cylinder 28 are filled by blocks or filler pieces 3l and the segmental shell 32 placed thereon and secured by clamping rings or collars 33, the latter made with beveled invention relates to ruling mechanism,
edges to engage over the beveled ends of shell 32, and when secured by screws, as shown, the rings or clips 33 will securely clamp the segmental shell on the cylinder.
The ends of the rules and perforators are notched, as shown to receive clips 36 secured by screws to the shell and projected into the notches to firmly secure the rules and perforators in position.
In operation the rulers are inked in any desired manner and when moved against a sheet of paper will print a line thereon, and as many of these rulers may be located around the cylinder as desired to rule parallel lines any distance apart.
A great many slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from my invention and hence I would have it understood that I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
l. The combination with a cylinder, of a segmental shell clamped on the cylinder and having longitudinal grooves and annular webs or enlargements, and means for clamping rules or perforators in said grooves.
2. The combination with a longitudinally grooved cylinder, of liller pieces in the grooves in the cylinder, a segmental shell clamped on the cylinder and having longitudinal grooves and annular webs or enlargements, rules and perforators, and means for clamping the rules and perforators in the grooves in the shell.
