CHURN.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ADDIE E.. CHERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bellwood, in the county of Blair, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns; and I do hereby declare the followinoto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the `art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention has reference to churns, and it aims, generally, to provide an exceedingly simple, inexpensive, and effective device of that nature.
More particularly, however, it is the object of the invention to provide a churn in which a thorough agitation of the contents of the cream can is effected by the useof two separate sets of dashers, one set being secured to the dasher shaft so as to rotate therewith, while the other set is carried by the cover of the can, which latter is rotated in a direction opposite that of the dasher shaft, the connection between the second set of dashers and the can cover being such that the dashers may readily be removed therefrom for cleaning purposes.
The invention further resides in the provision of a churn whichmay be converted into and utilized as an ice cream freezer byv merely detaching the second or relatively stationary set of dashers.
A still further improvement resides in the formation of an air passage in the dasher shaft, which passage extends below the level of the can lid and communicates at such point with the interior of the can to permit the entry of air thereinto.

claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like parts are designated by corresponding,reference numerals in the several views.
Of the said drawings z-Figure 1 is a vertical section through a churn constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section in the line 2-2 thereof. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the can cover. Fig. 4 is an'enlarged detail view of the set of dashers carried by thew cover. Fig. 5 is a detail viewV of the extensible handle carried by the drive shaft.

Referring moreparticularly to the drawings, 7 designates the outer receptacle or tub whose bottom is provided with astep bearing 8 in which` a depending projection 9 formed on the bottom of the cream can 10 is adapted to it, this projection being socketed for the reception of the `lower end of the dasher shaft 11.
The tub carries at itstop a strap 12 of the usual type, which strap is provided with an integral cap portion 13y located'intermediate the ends thereof. The shaftk is squared at its upper vend and carries at such point a beveled pinion 14 provided with a hub 15 which, with the shaft, extends through a central opening in the cap 13, the pinion being retained in place upon the shaft by means of a set screw v16 which ext-ends throughan opening in its hub and impinges against the shaft. The strap above referred to, whose body portion is disposed slightly above the top of the tub serves also as a support for the drive shaft 17 upon the inner end of which is mounted a beveled pinion 18 which meshes with the pinion 14 and with an oppositely facing pinion 19 formed upon the cover 33 of the cream can, the lastmentioned pinion being provided with an axial opening through which the dasher shaft extends intothe interior kof the can, rotation of the drive shaft thus effecting a rotation in opposite directions of the dasher shaft and can, the cover of which is provided with a series of depending pins 20 which engage correspondingly located hooksy 21 formed on the can, the can and its coverbeing held together by this means.
The shaft 11 carries a main dasher in the form of an Open rectangular frame comprising upper and lower cross pieces 22 which extend through openings formed through the dasher shaft, and have their correspond# ing ends secured to vertical blades 23 which extend aslight distance above and below the cross-pieces 22. In addition, the dasher shaft carries a series of horizontal plates which project laterally therefrom and are arranged in staggered relation, one above the other.
The second set of dashers which are rotated in a direction opposite to that of the hoops 26, the plates being slit at such points to permit the engagement of the hoops therewith. rIhese plates are connected with the can cover by means of a series of pairs of depending fingers 34 which are formed on the under face thereof and engage with the upper edges of the plates, each plate being fitted between a pair of fingers. It is therefore apparent that when the can and its cover are rotated, the attachment of the plates to the cover causes the same to rotate therewith. Each plate is preferably provided with a series of openings through which the contents of the can pass during the rotation of the latter. The arrangement of the several plates is such that they extend inwards towards the dasher shaft, their upper and lower edges being in contact with the bottom and cover of the can, and their outer vertical edges with the vertical wall of the can, to which they are set at an angle. In order to` admit air into the interior of the can during its rotation, the dasher shaft is provided with a longitudinal bore 27 which extends from the upper end of the shaft to al point below the plane of the upper edges of the blades 23, at which point the bore communicates with an opening 28 formed transversely through the shaft. The outer end of the drive shaft 17 carries a handle 29 by means of which its rotation is effected.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that upon rotation of the drive shaft, the can and dasher shaft will rotate in opposite directions. the provision of the two separate sets of dashers effecting a thorough agitation of the contents ofthe can, this agitation being enhanced by the formation of the openings in the plates 25 andby the entry of air into the interior of the can through the air passages 27 and 2S.
rIhe device above described can be readily converted into and utilized as an ice cream freezer by merely detaching the second or cover -carried series of dashers from the cover. It is advisable, however, to make use of a smaller can in order to dispose the outer edges of the blades 23 sufficiently close to the wall of the can. In either instancea space exists between the inner wall of the tub and the outer wall of the can, which space is sheet metal, while the hoops 26 which are.
engaged therewith are formed by metal straps wliose opposite ends are connected in any desired manner. IVhile three plates are shown in the present instance,'it is understood that there is to be no limitation to this number.
That is claimed is In a mixing machine, the combination of a tub; a rotatable receptacle disposed within the tub; a removable cover for the receptacle provided upon its inner face with a' series of pairs of lingers; means for locking the cover upon the receptacle; a gear provided upon the outer face of the cover and formed with an axial opening; a dasher shaft extending through said opening and formed with a longitudinal air passage extending below the vplane of the cover and opening through the upper end of the shaft, said passage communicating at its lower end with a second air passage formed transversely through the shaft; a series of dashers carried by said shaft; a series of dasher plates carried by the cover and having their upper ends engaged with said fingers; upper and lower hoops engaged with said plates for joining the same together; a gear carried by the dasher shaft; a drive shaft; and a gear carried by the drive shaft and engaged with the gears carried by the cover and dasher shaft, for rotating t-he latter and the cover in opposite directions.
