RETAINING CLIP. APPLICATION FILED APE,14.190B.
7, a ,H u 7 w I n w w A8 m Vn m e Wujvziss s To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD FLEMING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Steubenville, in the county of Jeii'erson and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Retaining- Clips; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in retaining clips and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character whereby a writing implement, such as a pen or pencil, will be held within a pocket or other location against accidental displacement.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character which can be employed as a pen holder.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character which is made from a single piece of material, said material being preferably that of resilient metal.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character which will be simple in construction, efficient and advantageous in practice and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view .the invention consists of the details of construction and in the novel arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter referred to.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views and in which,
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a pencil with the invention applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of a pencil with the in vention applied thereto, said invention being illustrated in section.
In the drawings, 1 denotes a pencil of any ordinary or preferred structure which is embraced by the segmental wings or extensions 2 projecting laterally from the body portion 3 of the combined holder. A portion 4 of the body 3 above the wings or extensions 2 is bent back over the body portion 3 proper and is suitably curved to form a Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 14, 1908.

clip as is more particularly shown in Fig. 2. The body portion 3 beneath the clip is pinched as at 5 to form a rib acting in conjunction with the clip 4. By this arrangement it will be seen that the action of the clip I with relation 'to the body 3 will be greatly enhanced and that the clamping action of the clip will be greatly facilitated. The end of the body 3 opposed to that having the wings 2 is provided with the transversely extending projections 6 bent or curved to extend beneath the body portion 3 in order to form a pocket or socket for the reception of a pen point 7.
In Fig. 1 a device is shown in a position to be employed as a retaining clip but should it be desired to use the pen for writing purposes, it is only necessary that the body 3 be pushed down the pencil 1 until the point 7 projects sufficiently beyond an end thereof to permit its use.
It might be well to state that when the device is applied to an indelible pencil, it is only necessary to dip the same in water to form an indelible pen without ink.
I claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture a combined retaining clip and pen holder formed of a single piece of material and comprising a body portion, a clip arranged above the body portion, clamping projections projecting laterally from the body portlon adjacent the junction of the body portion and the clip and ext-ensions'projecting laterally from the opposite end of the body portion bent therebeneath to form a socket.
2. As a new article of manufacture a combined retaining clip and pen holder formed of a single piece of material and comprising a body portion, a clip arranged above the body portion, clamping projections projecting laterally from the body portion adjacent the junction of the body portion and the clip and extensions projecting laterally from the opposite end of the body portion bent therebeneath to form a socket, said body portion beneath the clip being pinched to form a rib.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDIVARD FLEMING.
