Toall whom it may concern: Be it'known that I, JOHN D. Mars, citizen of the United States, residing at Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Books, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates V to hotel registers with special reference to such as have edges extending beyond the edges of the book and furnishing space for advertising matter.

The leading object of my invention is to construct these extension edges separate from the registers and supply them with means whereby they can be conveniently attached to, and detached from the covers of the book.

The following specifications will fully illustrate and describe my invention when taken in connection with the drawings accompanying the same and forming a part hereof.

Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one end of the book showing the manner in which the part 25 clasps over the end and against the longitudinal edge of the cover against the hinge and between the hinge and the back of the book.

Like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in each of the figures.

Reference being had to the drawings 2 denotes a hotel register which consists of a blank book ruled in a suitable manner and where used as a hotel register, provided with space for the name of the hotel and beneath, the usual spaces for registration for guests. The leaves 5 of this book extend to the edges of the covers 6. The lids of the covers are split or recessed out and in this recess is inserted a steel plate 10 for the purpose presently to appear. The removable edges 12 are formed of a board let with a glass covering 15 and between the board and glass is inserted a card on which is printed or stamped various advertisements 16. The edges thus formed are surrounded on the ends and longitudinal outer edge by a frame 18 constructed preferably of channel bar shape with the sides 20 extending over the edges of the board and glass 15. Preferably in the longitudinal center of each of the outer edges of the lids of the cover is a recess 7 in which is inserted the steel plate 10 that projects beyond the edge of the cover and engages a similar recess t) in the removable edge of the cover for the purpose of rigidly holding the removable edges and cover of the book in the same plane. Instead of a plate 10 the edges may be dovetailed to the edges of the cover.

The frame 18 extends beyond the removable edge and forms elasping arms which clasp the ends of the lids of the cover but where they extend along the entire end of the lids they are each preferably provided with a hook 25 that is bent over or around upon the inner longitudinal edge of the lids and prevent the removable edge from being withdrawn. These arms may extend only part of the distance along the ends of the cover and be removably secured to the cover in any convenient manner.

For the purpose of preventing the frame 18 from marring or otherwise injuring the counter or rest upon which the book is sustained, there is secured along upon the outer surface of the board 14: near to the inner edge of the frame a rib 30 of some soft, pliable material such as a cotton cord. The cord may not extend the whole length of the extension edge but may be broken and form knots or pins to rest on the counter.

In applying the removable edges the plate 10 is inserted in the recess of the cover and the arms being made of spring material may be readily sprung out sufliciently to allow the cover to be slid in till it contacts with the inner edge of the removable edge 12 and the plate 10 will enter the recess or split in the edge of the cover of the book then the arms of the frame are released and will clasp the ends of the cover and the hook 25 engage over the inner edge of the cover and hold the edge 12 in position.

When the register is filled the register is released by springing out the arms of the frame and another register of the same size is readily put in its place.

It is manifest that various constructions may be made of the means whereby the arms are removably attached to the cover and the cover and edges held in the same plane without departing from the spirit of my invention and I do not desire to be limited to this specific mode of construction or application.

Having now described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a device of the character described, a book cover, a removable edge made separate, and a frame adapted to engage'the removable edge and ends of the cover and removably secure the edge to the cover.

2. In a device of the character described, a book cover, a separate removable edge, a frame adapted to engage the edge and removably secure the edge to the cover of the book, and means secured to the outer side of the removable edge for preventing the frame or edge from contacting with the support on which the book rests.

3. In a device of the character described, a book cover, a separate removable edge, a frame engaging the removable edge and cover and detachably uniting them together, and a yielding rib or raised surface secured to one side of the removable edge near the frame for preventing the frame from mar ring the book support.

4. In combination with hotel registers or other books a removable or detachable edge, and means engaging the ends of the lids of the cover for removably attaching the edge to the longitudinal edge of the cover.

5. In a device of the character described, a book cover, separate removable edges adapted to contact with the edges of the cover, means for holding the edges of the cover and the removable edges in the same plane, and means for removably attaching the removable edges to the edges of the cover.

6. In a device of the character described, a book cover, a separate and removable edge consisting of a base board, a transparent covering for said board, in combination with a frame engaging the removable edge and the ends of the cover and removably uniting them together.

7. In a device-of the characterdescribed, a'bookcover, a separate and removable edge consisting of a base board a transparent covering for said board with space between for advertisements, a channel-bar :frame in which the board and covering are held said frame engaging the ends of the cover and detachably uniting the removable edge to the cover, and means connectedto the cover and edge for holding them in the same plane.

8. In a device of the character described a book cover, a removable edge separate from the cover, a frame adapted to partly surround the edge, and means attached to the frame for removably attaching the frame with the separate edge to the cover.
