To all whom tt may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH GRIMMER,a citizen of the United States, residing at Griffith, county of Lake, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Ties, of which the following is a. specification. Y

This'invention relates to railroad ties, and more particularly to metallic ties, the object being to provide a tie with very novel means for securing' the rail clamping plates thereon, whereby the rails Will be securely locked in perfect alinement Without any danger of them spreading.

Another object of my invention is, to provide a tie which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction, and one which is very strong and durable. l

These objects are obtained by the novel arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter fully described and shown in the accompanying drawings in which:

Figure 1,' is a top plan view of my improved tie. Fig. 2, 1s a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3, is'a transverse section. Fig. 4, is a detail longitudinal section showing a rail secured thereon, and, Fig. 5, is a perspectiveview of one end portion of the tie showing a rail clamped thereon.

-In the drawings l indicates a closed rectangularv metallic shell lforming the body of my improved tie, the only openings extending into the body being the core holes 1, in the bottom wall la. The top lb is flat, and is provided with spaced enlarged transverse portions or ribs 2 2, 3 3 at each side of the longitudinal center and on its under side,

into which extend transverse slots 4, formed in the top, and which are provided with enlarged outer ends 4- for the purpose hereinafter full described. It should be noticed that the s ots do not extend or open into the body 'of the tie, but are closed at the bottom by walls 2*- f formed by the respective ribs.

Extending up from the top 1l of the tie and toward the outer end of the tie from the enlarged portions 2 and 3 respectively,are transversrlbs 5`5, against whichthe outside clamping plate 6, abuts,which latter is adapted to fit against the side of the rail 7, which is arranged on the top of the -tie between the slots. The plate is shaped lto conform to the flange andV web of the rail, and is provided withspac'ed openings through' which bolts 8,

Aare-agde ted to extend, the heads of the bolts being p in the enlarged portions of the lslots 4, and then forcee inwardly'so as to` be securely locked therein. [Nuts are then screwed down on thebolts, which securely lock the clamping plate in position, .so that it will be impossible for the rail to move or spread. Similar bolts 9, are placed in the slots at the other side of the rail over which fits the clamping plate- 10, which is also shaped to conform tol the'web and base of the rai1, and it will be seen by this arrangement the clamping plates and bolts can be readily detached when desired.

From the foregoing description it will be :'j'-,

` seen that after the `bolts have once been insei-ted, .to remove the clamping plate, `it is not necessary to remove the bolts, and by simply nnscrewing the nuts, the plates can be readily removed when it is desired to place in a new rail. p

Having thus described my invention what Iclaim as new and desire to secure by L etters Patent is:

l. A railroad tie comprising a closed metallic shell having a Hat top provided with .i transverse ribs on its under side, bolt re'- ceiving slots formed inthe top of said tie and extending into said ribs, bolts havingv their heads arranged inI said slots, and clamping plates secured on said tie by said bolts, substantially as described.

2. A railroad tie comprising; a hollow rectangular metal shell entirely closed except for thecore holes in the bottom wall, the top wall of said tie being fiat and provided with transverse ribs formed on its under side, bolt receiving slots formed in the top of said 'tie and extending into said ribs, as and for the purpose specied.

3. A railroad tie comprising a metal shell having atop providedwith transverse ribs on its under side', and bolt receiving slots formed in theto of said tie and extending into said ribs, said slots being closed at the bottom by a wall forming 'a 1 portion of said ribs, substantially as described.
