FASTENER OR STAY.
To all whom it 'may concern: l
Be it known that I, Wenns R. S'ronnm', l citizen of the United States,l residingY at St. Augustine, in the county of St. John and l State of Florida, have invented new and use- .tul lmprm'cments in Fasteners or Stays,'of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to receptacles, particularly wooden receptacles such as cylindrical boxes, barrels, baskets and the like, and has for its object to provide a fastener' 1 adapted to be cheaply and expeditiously formed, in whole or part, of sheet-metal, and embodyingr such a. construction that it may be quickly and easilv disengaged from a rece tarlo when desired.
he invention will be 'fully understood from the following description and claim when the saine are read in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure l is a vertical section of so much of a roceliitacle as is necessary to illustrate the inode of using the fastener constituting the )referred embodiment of my invention. Y a. perspective view of my improved metallic fastener asthe same appears when removed from the body and cover of the receptacle. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. l showing a slightly modified fastener'.
Referring by letter to said drawings, and
A is the body oi a receptacle which is provided adjacent to its upper end With a hoop B, coniiected to it in the ordinary or any other manner compatible with the purpose of my invention. C is a cover, preferably of Wood, arranged. on the upper end of and closing the body A. ll is my improved metallic fastener, et which any preferred number may be enipioycd in combination with the body A and i [l cover o to scerne the latter on the torinei. The said fastener l) is -formed of one piece of metal, and comprises a. body portion a susceptible of being easily bent intothe 'form illustrated in Fig. ly and having one or moreI preferably three, barbs l) on its upper por'- tion, a. loop c ext-endingr inward 'from the lower end ol the bod ortion l), and a tongue d extending upward rom the inner end of loop c and tapered upward from a oint adjacent to its lower end to a point a( jacent to its np )er end so that its side presented to the hoop IB is inclined downward and outward be pres .Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 24, 1907` Serial No. 394.296.
Patented Sept. 15', lQOS.
l ently pointed out. ln tbc present and pre-l ferred embodiment of my invention, tbc.
, fastener l) is formed of a tape of sheet-metal;
thc described upward taper of the tongue d 'being afforded by a swell ll in said tong-uc7 which swell is arranged to bc opposed to the hoop B, is wider at its lower end than at its upper end, and is inclined downward and out ward as shown. As will be readily apprcciated, the tape of sheet-metal may be taken from a reel, and by virtue of the construction of my fastener, a. multiplicity of the same may be expeditiously and cheaplyv produced from the tape.
ln the practical use of' my novel fastener l), the tongue d is driven upward between tbc hoop l5 and receptacle b'ody il to the )osition shown in Fig. l, so as to enable the oop c tosnuglyreceive the lower edge of hoop ll, after which the upper end of thc body portion (i. is bent inward upon the cover (l and its barbs are forced into tbc upper sido of the cover to secure the latter on the body A.
l'Vhe-n the tongue d of my novel fastener l) is forced upward between thc body A and hoop B in the manner before described, it will be apparent that because of the taper ot the said tongue d, the hoop B will be forced or sprungr away from the body A and placed under tension. From this it 'follows that when the upper portion of the fastening body /1 is bent from over the cover C, and the fastening is pressed downward, thc tendency of the hoop B to spring toward the body A will crowd or press the tongue d downward `from between tbe body A and hoop .ll and in that way 'render easy the disengaganent of the said tongue d from the hoop and the rc- Inoval of the fastener' 'from the receptacle.
Noti-\.vithstandingr the practical advantage following 'from the provision oi: the tapered tongue d on thc body b of tbc fastener' l) as set forth in the foregoing, it will b apparent that thesaid tongue d does not add appreciably to the costof produeinpr the fastener.
l] prei'ero'f course. to form the barbs l) integral witltliebody of the 'fastenery but l do not desire to'be understood as eon'l self to such speciiic construction for the rcason that the fastener may be of the construction indicated by D in Fig. 3, and may be connected to the cover (l by separate nails b iningI Vinyor other means without involving .departure 1W from the scope of my invei'ition as claimed. Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure byv Letters-Patl extending E rorn apoint adjacent to its' lower ent, is:` 1 end to point erdgaoent to .l The combination with areceptaele lie-ving opposed to the inner yside of t e hoop and a body land a hoop surrounding and coninclined upward and inward throughout its height.
nected to the body7 and a cover arranged o n ln testimony the rece taele; of a fastener, 'fornied of a strip whereorn have hereunto s et or' Het s reet-metal, and comprising u ody my hand in presence of two suberbing Wrt- 2o having lts upper portion bent over and connessess.
neeted to the cover, a loop at the lower end of WFLLS R STOKELY the body receiving the lower edge of the J l hoop, and a tongue extending upward 'lroni A said loop sind resting between the body and the hoop of the receptacle and having a swell l lNitnessesf N. C. HEALY,
