LIFE-BOAT DETACHING DEVICE Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed September 6, 1907. Serial No. 391,705.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH PREVOT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Green Bay, in the county of Brown and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Life-Boat Detaching Devices, of which the following is a description.
My invention is a metal hanger to bebolted to each end of the life boat, the clip having a vertically disposed jaw or slot to receive a ring on the end of the hoisting rope, and a longitudinally operating, spring actuated pin or plunger passing through the ring, the mechanism so devised that the operator can release the boat by a pull on a line attached to holding pins and that it will then only release when the weight is removedthat is: when the boat is resting on the water or deck, etc.
The objects of my invention are to provide a detaching mechanism for life boats which shall be safe from danger of self release and can only be released by the operator when the boat is safely resting on the water. I attain these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1. represents a side view of the device; Fig. 2, a rear or inside view and Fig. 3, ahorizontal section through line O O Fig. 1.

M is a metal hanger consisting of a strap portion B which is bolted to the outer edge of the stem or stern post of a boat, a horizontal plate portion D bolted to the top through bolt holes C and the top or barrel like portion A which contains the releasing mechanism.
L is an eye and K a ring or link attached to the end of a hoisting rope or block. Link K fits loosely into a vertically disposed slot N in the hanger M, and is held by a pin or plunger E operating in the bore of the barrel portion of hanger. The barrel portion A of the hanger is bored in its outer portion P for an easy-sliding fit for plunger E and at its back portion R with a larger bore forming a shoulder at S. The plunger E is formed with a shoulder or annular ring J about midway of its length and a square portion F at the back.
The square portion F is extended a little outside the barrel portion A and an oval head H is riveted or otherwise attached thereto.
T is a plug or bushing which is threaded into the rear portion of barrel A and is perforated with a square hole forming a sliding fit with square portion F.
G is a coiled steel spring placed between the shoulder S of barrel and shoulder J of plunger, and when the plunger is in position shown in Fig. 3, this spring is in compression. The plunger is held against the spring in the closed position shown by means of a holding pin I which passes through the barrel A, bushing T and square portion of plunger. The position of link, plunger and holding pin as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, is the position of the parts when the 'boat is held in suspension; The spring G is not strong enough to force the plunger out of engagement with the link when the weight of one end of the boat is being held by the plunger through the link. The holding pin I has an eye and to this is attached a chain or line which is passed to a convenient point in the boat for operating. When the weight of the boat is removed from the plunger, as when the boat is resting on the water or deck, the operator may pull out the holding pin I by means of the line or chain, when the spring G will throw the plunger back out of engagement with link K, thereby releasing that end of the boat.
The operating lines may be fastened together so that the link at each end of boat may be released at the same time, or the lines may be separate and worked independently, this arrangement forming no part of the patentable features of this device but to be arranged according to the best judgment of the operator.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A boat releasing device comprising a metal hanger, bolt plates, a barrel portion, a vertically disposed slot, a link in said slot, a spring actuated plunger provided with a cylindrical portion engaging said link and said plunger also provided with a square portion, a bushing with a square hole threaded into the rear portion of said barrel, and a holding pin for holding the parts into position as set forth.
