IMPROYEMENT IN DnvIcE PQR BENDING PLOW-BANDES.
The `crhecilile referred to in thes'efetters Patentand making part of the same.
. Beitknown thatL WLLLIAM Hammamet thecityand countyof Peoria, andState of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Machine for Givingthe` Required Curves in `Plow-Handles; and I do hereby `declare that-the'fllowing isa full, clear, and exact description of tiie'constructionand operation of the same,A reference being had tothe accompanying drawings,
making a part of this specification," in which- Figure I is aperspective view. Figure 2 is anend elevation. Figure 3 is 'a rear View.
` Figures 4 and 5, views of lever-box..
Figure 6 is an end `view of upper formen Figure l7 is a side view of same. i Figure 8 is a side viewof `lower former. Figure) is an end view of the same.
` Like-letters-in the `figures of the drawings, indicate This machine, or apparatus, is for bending and at l the same time` twisting permanently plow-handles and other wooden objects. l Itis particularly `fitted for giving iandles such a curve as will t themould-board of a plow without `using any tool for that purpose.,
The machine is constructed of heavytimbers, restii-ngon aproper base, A AA. l i
` The drawings represent but six sections'of the machine, each spaceformedby theuprights B F B, and transverse bars aib c constitute a section, each section to hold and mould teu plowhandles. v
The drawingsvrepresent but one or twofformers in proper place. i Ten can be ranged side by side in each section.` Inthese sections the `upright timbers are seven` in number,'four on each end, B G D E, and three in the centre, F G H. The upright D is three times thesize of theothers g Y 4 IThe upright timbers carry the horizontal timbers a b c, the latter being attached to the uprights O FO. The horizontaltimbers a b c areso constructed as to present an inclined surface outwardly. r
Thecentral three horizontal timbers, d e f, in the immediate rear of the latter-described timbers', are adjustable by means of slots at' the ends and centre of each timber, secured by bolts or wood-screwato allow ot the adjustment 1 of distances betweenrthe timbers for'. the admittance of thin and thick handles, and cor` respond with the -reqniredwidth between' the upper and lower formers m nl" i "The three` stationary horizontal beams gk It h h, in the rear of those just described, and the same` bolted to the uprights D G D, are from one to three inches below the level of those marked d c f,vand sustain the rear former m, which latter is bolted to its underside.
In `the rear, and alongside of these' last beams g h l, It h,\ are placed the adjustable horizontal beams 'tj c o, `which arev suspended to the iron cross-bars c lu by the adjustable'hooks w w, or their equivalents. 'i
The formers, or moulding-blocks m n, are made" lo cast-metal, from any form or shape of mould-boards ersyfrom' that pattern. Then the former is cast, thus securing aperfect model of the curve inthe mouldboard. Besides the general curve or recurve in a plowhandle, the formers may be so modelled as to give anl oblique curve at any desired angle.`
To the former m are attachedthe iron strap o and bar p, connected with the holder"q. .The use of the strap'is to keep the fibres of the handle, in bending it, from springing up and breaking the surface.
f After the handle is inserted between'the formers, the holder q is further secured to the wood by passing over it the hingeddron bar fr, which-is secured under the hook's ofthe hold'ast t. The bar p contains four or five holes, one inch apart, ,by which the holder q is adj usted to long or short wood. The holdfast is bolted (so as toreceive any inclination) to the bars c, b, and c.
The lower part of the plow-handle, or that part adjustedto the lower part ofthe mould-board, and fastened to the inside ofthe bar of the plow which runs next to the landside when the plow is at work, is fastlened in position by means of the balanced hook u, one
hook to catch former and handle.
The operation of this machine is as follows: The wood for handle, after being` properly steamed,
is inserted between the formers m n, the lower end vof handle projecting beyond the upper former. The vstrap o and holder q are brought down over it, and the bar o" of holdfast tsecured over it, having rst adj usted?, v Vthehorizontal beams `cl and g. f'
places, and keep the end of handle from splitting or splintering. p
. The box has an arm, L, projecting from one end, b y which the twist or turn is given to the wood.
Theupper end of -arm rL receives,l by means of a hole, the hook of the lever Z, at the-same time that the hook on upper side of lever -is placed over the On depressing the handle of lever, the box draws up the end of the handle obliquely, or higher on the side onwhich the arm K projects.
The straps o and bar p, together with the holder q,
beams e and h, are raised up out ofthe way by meansof the leyer b b, resting on the cross-bar running between the uprights B and l.
The front bars a., b, and c, work independently of one another, to suit the convenience of the operator. rlhev same remarks apply also to the horizontal beams d, e, and f, excepting cl, which is blocked beneath, and that of e, which has slotted -holes, operating to regulate the distance between the formers for thick or thin plow-handles.
Itis designed that the frame shall be constructed to contain from sixty to five hundred or one thousand formers,77 with appliances, so that an unlimited number of plow-handles may be shaped at one time.y
Having thus fully described my invention,4
What I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The formers m u, when constructed as herein described and for the purposeset forth.
2. The adjustable horizontal bars a b c, and d,1e,
vand j, operated in the manner and for the purpose as described.
3. The combination of. the formers m n with the bars d and g of the frame-work, substantially as described. l
4. The adjustable bar or slide X, lever Z, uprights y y, box M, arm K, adjusting-clamp L, ballanced hook u, and adjustable beam i, combined and operated as l tially a's described.
