Description
" key-in the noie. i
amm d4 A w stent @imita To all whom 'it ma/y conce/m:`
Be it known that I, EDWARD 'Hnnnsrnm of Obi# cago, in thecounty of Cook, and State` of Illinois, have invented an Improved Lock; and I do hereby declare `that the following is a full,`clear,iand exact description thbreof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and letters marked thereon,"` making a part `of this description, in whichplates.
Figure 9, the key.
Figure 10, the ratchet-cylinder. Figure 11, the stop which holds the Yguards in place, removed 'fromvthe case. y
The Anature of the present invention consists in the novxel"construction` and arrangement of a ratchet-key cylinder, which gives an alarm when the keyvis turned,
and which, whenv locked by a spring-stop, holds the A' represents lthe case; i
G, the spring-catch;
4 1, 23, 4, the guards;
i Q, the bolt; and 1 f i S, the guardstopof an ordinaryrim-lock, said guards beingV pivoted toa pin, R, and' operated by the f key Z in the usual manner.
L F, igs`.1,2, and .10, represent the eye of .the
key-hole, Whichpas'ses through the front audiback plates of the case, and it isgheld in place by aange,
\ Y, and ratchet-wheelM, both of which are rigidly at- -EDWAIU3 .HERBSTEROF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.

tached to the eye, and rotate between the front and Lback plates of the lock, andare slotted out at E', to
receive the uib of the key Z.
l The ratchet M has aghole, l?, made through it, in
which a spur,` orpin, E, put through the end of a spring, D, is placed to hold, the eye `L F in a fixed Y position, and it operates upon the end of a spring, K, fig. 2, and thus gives an alarm when the key Z is turned.
s Operation.
` Tolock the door, put the end of the key into the eyeL F, and so turn' it around as to bring the slots E opposite to the slot d in the case A, iig. 1, the end F' projecting through the case far enough for this purpose. This will allow the key to enter the lock and v tum the bolt Q.
`'Io lock the key in the key-hole,turn itl around until the hole P in the `ratchet M is opposite the hole I in the oase A; then swing the spring D on its-pivot,v
until the pin E passes intothe hole.` Y s By means of thisconstruction and arrangement a substantial alarm-lock is provided at small cost, whiley Y at the same time the key is so locked 'in the door, vas
to prevent it om being turned from the opposite side. l
Having thus described my invention,
Whatl claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is y l Y A look, A, provided with a rotating eye-cylinder, F, flange Y, ratchet M, spring K, and spring-stop D E,
so operating as to give an alarm, and hold the key in the lock, as set forth.
