hneln "W W we @a MMM RICHARD A. YORK, OF READING, MICHIGAN.
Letters Patent No. 89,7 23, dated May 4, 1869.
CQMBINIED LIFTING-J'ACK AND WRENCH.
The Schedule referred to iu these Letters Patent and making part of `the same.
To whom it may 'concern Be it known that I, RICHARD A. YORK, of Reading, in the county of Hillsdale, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined LiftingJack and Wrench; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification.
The nature of this invention relates to an improvement in lifting-jacks, for raising wagons, and other heavy bodies, by means of a rack, pawl, and lever, the end of the latter being also an adjustable wrench.
A, in the drawings, represents a standard, provided with slot B, extending, from near the foot, to the top.
C is a slotted rack, of aboutthe length of the slot B, within which it works vertically, and is held in po sition, relative to the standard A, by a pin D, which passes through the standard and the slot in the rack.
E is-a pawl, pivoted, at F, to the standard A, and which is designed to engage with the rack, and hold up the same when raised.
His a lever, movable and adjustable, working upon the pin F as a fulcrum, and provided with a bail or loop I, which is designed to engage with the rack, be-
This lever is crotched, in order to slip over the top of the standard.
J is a fixed jaw, which forms one part of the wrench.
At the outer end of the lever K, is a movable jaw,
provided with lug L, which passes through the slot M.
The sides of the slot, upon the top, are notched, as
at N, and the lug L has a hole made through it, to
receive the spring-'wire O, by means of whichthe jaw K is held in any desiredposit-ion, as may be required, in order to make the Wrench fit a large or small nut.
By means of a jack, constructed in this manner, l great weights may be lifted andsustained, While the removable lever, with its attachments, furnishes an adjustable wrench.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The lever H, provided with bail I, and jaws .I and K, when constructed to operate either in combination with standard A, rack C, and pawl E, as a lever-jack, or, independently of the same, as a wrench, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the above-named lever H, provided with bail I, and jaws J andK, with the standard A, slotted rack C, and pawl E, when arranged, and constructed, and operating substantially as and for the purposes described.
