JAMES H. DYET'L'OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO W. J. ANDERSON, OF
BROOKLYN,
NEW YORK.
STRIP-MOISTENING- MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 12, 1908. Serial No. 438,251.
To-all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. Dim, a
.citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strip-Moistening Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Myinventionrelates to machines inwhich a roll of aper or other material is supported central 1n a vertical position on a hor1zontal pin or s aft. As the strip of paper is drawn out the roll revolves on the shaft, and unless the revolution of the roll is controlled, its tendency is to continue turning by the imetus gained by drawingout the strip, causlng'a surplus of the unwound paper and interfering with its proper use.
In gummed strip moistemng machines, having a strip cutter attached, it is very-important that a brake should be applied to the roll, of sufiicient force to produce some tension of the strip, when it is drawn againstthe teeth of the cutter, as well as to prevent a surplusage of the paper. In order to secure theproper degree of resistance to the roll, I provide a friction cover, one for each roll, if the machine contains a plurality of rolls, which engages the roll by gravity.
The accompanying drawmg illustrates my invention, like characters of reference denotlng corres onding arts in the several views.
In the rawing, i ure 1 shows a side elevation of a gumme strip moistening machine, equlpped with my lnvention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the friction cover, alone. Fig. 3, is a rear elevation of a'two roll machine, partly in section on line m0c of Fig. 1, and having one roll reduced in circumference.
The figure 5 denotes the base, and 6, 6, the moistening machine, carrying two rolls. earings 8, on the sup orts 6, 6, are provided for the ends of the sha t7, .on which the rolls 10, of ummed paper, or other material freely revo ve.
12 is a water bowl in which a s on e or some equivalent material 13, is p ace on which the gummed strip is moistened; and
14 is a cutter on which desired lengths of the strip, are cut off.
' 16 denotes the cover of each roll. The upper art of this cover is preferably arched to con orm in some degree to the periphery of the roll. In each side of the cover is a vertical slot 18, open at the bottom and extending almost to the top of the cover. This slot is sufliciently wide to admitthe shaft loosely therein. The cover rests directly upon the upper surface of the roll, and acts as a friction brake to the roll, its sides having the slots 18, extending downwards below the shaft 7, and thus permitting the vertical movement of the cover on the shaft made necessary by the Varying size of the roll, and at the same time preventing any unintentional displacement of the cover by the turning of the roll wit'hm it. It is evident without further explanatlon that this cover will exert an effective and umform action on the roll, from the highest to the lowest points of its periphery and unt1l all the pa er is drawn off.
What I claim and desire to secure is- 1. In a machine of the character described, a base, vertical supports thereon, a shaft journaled on said supports, a roll on sald shaft, a cover resting on said roll, vertlcal slots in each side of said cover open at the bottom and extending almost to the top of said cover and sufiiciently wide to loosely admit said shaft and allow a vertical movement of said cover thereon.
2. In a strip moistening machine having a base and supportsthereon, shaft bearings on said supports, a shaft in said bearings, a roll \on said shaft, and a cover on said roll having vertical slots in its sides extending from the bottom to near its top, said slots being adapted to loosely admit said shaft and permit vertical movement of said cover thereon.
In testimony in presence of two witnesses.
D. P. Mormow, A. M. SwITzER.
whereof I affix my signature,
