Description
No. 883,817. PATENTED APR. 7, 1908. F. T- LESTAGE. PIPE WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 30, 1905.
Wank T1; as my e,
Inventor,
Attorneys FRANK TOUSSAINT LESTAGE, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
PIPE-WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April '7, 1908.
Application filed August 30, 1905. Serial No. 276,348.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK TOUSSAINT LESTAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, county of New Haven, in the State of Connecticut, United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relatesto pipe wrenches; the object of my invention is to provide an eflicient, convenient and durable, easily adjusted instrument of that class; a further object is to provide means for maintaining a spring tension on the loose jaw of the wrench; a further object is to provide an improved construction with a minimum number of parts and, my invention consists in the con struction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein illustrated, described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, I have illustrated one form of embodiment of my invention, in which drawings similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention, showing its application to a pipe, which is shown in section Fig. 2 is a plan view of the back of the Wrench of my invention, showing its application to a pipe and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail in side elevation, illustrating the handle of the wrench of my invention.
Referring to the drawings, 4 designates a curved outer jaw having an inner curved face provided with teeth 5. Projecting from the jaw 4 are parallel integral arms 6, terminating in eyes 7, through which eyes is disosed a bolt 8 adapted to act as-a pivot for a handle 9, the inner end of which is provided With the curved serrated face 10.
The handle 9 is provided with a horizontal slot 11, from one of the walls of which slot project the lugs 12. The space between the lugs 12 in the opposite wall of the slot 11 is of suflicient dimension to permit the passage of the bolt 8, so that the distance between the teeth 5 and 10 may be varied by adjusting the handle so that the bolt '8 bears on the difierent lugs 12.
On the back of the jaw 4 are formed lugs 13, adapted to receive a pivotal member, such as a bolt 14. Coiled on the pivot 14 is a spring 15, one end 15 of which bears on the back of the jaw 4, and the free end of which carries a plate 16, which bears on the hand e 9.
The tension of the spring 15 is adapted to actuate the jaw 4 towards the rounded end 10 of the handle, whereby a pipe, such as A, is'automatically clamped. Pressure on the handle 9 of course clamps the pipe tighter by reason of the pivotal engagement of the jaw 4 to the handle, as described.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a wrench, a handle, a plurality of notches therein, a jaw, a yoke connected thereto, a bolt passing through said yoke and adapted to selectively engage the aforesaid notches, lugs depending from said jaw, a rod passing through said lugs, a spring coiled about said rod and bearing at one end upon said jaw and terminating at its opposite end in two substantially parallel connected members and a concave plate supported between said parallel members and adapted to receive and support the underface of the aforesaid wrench handle.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANK TOUSSAINT LESTAGE.
WVitnesses PHILIP J. LUDWIG, HARRY V. SANTRY.
