To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY W. FISHEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of Manhattan, city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Belt-Buckles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.

My invention relates to beltbuckles and particularly to belt -buckles for `use with elts of ribbon or other light material, such as are worn by women. It is customary to fasten belts of this character with buckles or clasps comprising two members having means, such as a hook and an eye, for securing them. together, and provided with means for adjustably securing the belt to the buckle members.

The obj ect of my invention is to produce a belt-buckle of this character in which the,

appearance of an ordinary tongue-buckle is preserved While the buckle is provided with simple and effective means for adjustably securing a belt of ribbon or like material to the buckle, and to this end the invention comprises a buckle having an. open body provided with means for removably securing it to another member and with means for adjustably securing the belt to the body, the latter means being located a-t the further side of the opening in the body, so that the material of the belt is passed behind the body and across the opening so as to appear through the opening and present, especially when false tongues are used, the ornamental appearance of the ordinary tongue buckle.

More specifically, the invention com rises also the improved device for adjustab y securing a belt of ribbon or like material to a buckle, comprising two substantially parallel bars about which the end of the belt is passed, one or both of the bars being flexible and accessible so that it may be bent to more securely fasten the belt.

I will now describe the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings and will then point out my invention in claims.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a beltbuckle embodying the present invention, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section looking from below. Figs. 3 and 4 are similar views of a modified form of the invention.

The buckle shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises two members of which one has an open body portion 1 provided with two false tongues 2 which are secured to the body at their outer ends, their inner ends being free to afford a passage for the belt. The body l is provided also with a device for adjustably securing the belt comprising two flat bars 3 and 4 of flexible sheet metal, and the end 5 of the belt is passed, as shown in Fig. 2, about these bars in such a way that by bending the bar 3 upwardA in the middle, as in Fig. 2, the belt is securely prevented by friction from pulling away under the strains incident to use. it is necessary to re-adjust the belt this is done by bending the bar 3 down, drawing the belt one way or the other about the bar 4, and then bending the bar 3 up again. To facilitate this o eration the fastening device is so locate that access may conveniently be had to the bar 3 through the opening in the body. The other end 6 of the belt is secured to the other buckle member 7 in any convenient manner, and the members are detachably secured together by means of a slotted portion 8 on the member 7 which engages a fiat hook 9 formed on a cross-bar 10 which is fixed to the b'ody portion 1 and passes across and behind the opening therein.

Owing to the position of the bars 3 and 4 at the further side of the opening the belt passes across and behind the opening, and in front ofthe cross-bar 10 and the buckle member 7, so that the body ortion 1 and the false tongues 2 are the on y visible portions of the buckle, and the buckle thus presents substantially the appearance of an ordinary tongue-buckle- The buckle shown in Figs. 3 and 4 comprises two nearly similar members having body portions 11 and false tongues l2. Both members are rovided with bars 13 and 14 for securing t e ends of the belt. One end 15 is shown, while the bar 13 of the righthand member is shown in its original position before being bent up to secure the belt. The two members are removably secured together by a hasp 18 engaged by a hook 19.

It is obvious that various modifications When may be made in the embodiment of my invention shown and herein described within the nature and scope of the invention as set forth in the following claims.

I claim:

l. A belt-buckle having two members provided with means for detachably securing them together, one of the members being provided with means for adjustably securing the belt comprising two substantially unresilient parallel flat bars located normally in the same plane of which one is flexible so as to be bent to secure the belt after it is passed about the other bar.
