ARKANSAS DOCK, OF LAKE CITY, ARKANSAS; JOSIE ST Specification of Letters Patent.
, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM CRAD- RATTON ADMINISTRATRIX OF SAID ALBERT CLOTHES-PIN.
Patented March 24, 1908.
Application filed June 16, 1906. Serial No. 322,033.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT S nATToN,a citizen of the United States, residing at Lake City, in the county of Oraighead and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Olothes-Pins, of which the followin is a specification.
My invention re ates to clothes-pins, and its primary object is to provide a device of this character adapted to be secured to a line in a manner to prevent its accidental displacement therefrom, and to permit it to be readily and quickly adjusted thereon.
A further object of my invention is to provide a clothes-pin which is adapted to secure two articles upon a line without overlapping the articles, one of which is simple and durable, and one which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arran ement of parts hereinafter fully described, 0 aimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view, illustrating the manner in which my improved clothespins are secured to a line. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a view in front elevation of the clothes-pin detached, and Fig. 4 is a view in end elevation thereof detached.
My improved clothes-pin is designed to be constructed of a single strand of wire treated to prevent it from rusting, and it comprises a helical body 2 and a hooked attaching element 3. The body 2 preferably consists of two convolutions, the apex convolution being smaller than the base convolution. The end of the base convolution is bent to provide a member 3 which overlaps a portion of this convolution to rovide a substantially annular base member 4, which is adapted to be yieldingly held in en agement with a clothesline by the hooke attaching element 3. The provision of the base member 4 renders the clothes-pin easy of application to the clothes-line. The apex convolution is extended longitudinally through the body 2 and formed to provide the hooked attaching element 3. The base member engages the clothes-line at points on the side 0 posite from that engaged by the attaching el ment. The clothes-pin is applied to a clothes-line by placing the base member 4 in engagement therewith and by exerting pressure on the a ex convolution in the direction of the c othes-line, after which the hooked attaching element 3 may be caused to engage the clothes-line. It should be thus apparent that the clothes-pin is secured in applied position against accidental displacement, and that the same may be readily and quickly adjusted.
In securing an article to the clothes-line,
two of my improved clothes-pins are used, and the base members 4 thereof moved away from the clothes-line by pressure applied to the base members in the direction of the apex convolutions of the bodies, after which the article is ap lied to permit portions thereof to be camped between the clothes-line and the base members 4.
Having fully described and illustrated my invention, what I claim is:
A clothes-pin comprisin a helical body consisting of an apex convo ution and a base convolution, the end of the apex convolution being extended longitudinally through the body and formed to provide a hook attaching element adapted to secure the pin to a clothes-line, the end of the base convolution being bent to provide a member overlapping a portion of this convolution and thus providing a substantially annular base member adapted to engage the clothes-line.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT STRATTON.
