Description
PATENTED MAR. 24, 1908. nnumzs. MATTRESS MAKING MACHINE.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 22. 1907.
INVENTOR Atlorney DANIEL HAYNES, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
MATTRESS-MAKING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 22, 1907.
Patented March 24, 1908.
Serial No. 403,400.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, DANIEL HAYNES, of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattress-Making Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled. in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in mattress making machines,--the object of the invention being to provide simple means capable of being operated by inexperienced persons to quickly and easily insert a bat into a ticking without danger of rufliing or otherwise injuring or disfiguring the bat.
A further object is to provide means for inserting a bat into a ticking, which means shall comprise a minimum number of parts and which shall avoid the use of collapsible or knockdown framework and which shall be efficient in the performance of its functions in manufacturing or assembling the parts which constitute a mattress.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel feature of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a perspective view of a machine embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the machine tilted; and Fig. 3 is a detailview illustrating the clamp.
1 represents a frame comprising parallel side bars 2; depending legs 3 and transverse bars 4 connecting the pairs of legs. One end of the frame is elevated somewhat, as at 5, and to this elevated portion one end of a table or platform 6 is secured, the or portion of this table being thus disposed in a plane somewhat above the major portion of the framework, having one end only-supported by the latter. Hinges 7 are secured to the forward cross-bar 4 for the purpose of hinging the machine to a floor or other suitable base support, whereby the machine can be tilted on these hinges, as hereinafter explained, and in order to maintain the table in an inclined or tilted position during a portion of the operation thereof, a hinged leg or prop 8 may be employed at the rear end of the machine.
A bat 9 is placed upon the table and is clamped thereto at the free end of the latter by means of clamping members 1011.
These clamping members consist of bars which may be of wood or other suitable material and each bar is provided at one end with a hook 12 and at the other end with a loop 13. The bar 10 is placed upon the bat close to one end thereof and the bar 11 is placed under the free end of the table. A connector 14 attached to the loop 13 of one bar is then connected with the hook 12 at one end of the other barfithus connecting the ends of the two clamping bars at one side of the table. The other ends of the clamping bars are then connected together in the same manner. One of the connectors is permanently attached to a loop 13 of one bar and the other connector is attached to the loopl3 of the other bar. When the bars 10-11 shall have been disposed as above explained, one end of the bat and the paper facings 15 will be clamped to the free end of the table. The table will now be tilted slightly and preferably propped in such tilted position and then a ticking 16 will be slipped over the bat so as to inclose the same and also the. table or platform on which it rests. The tilting of the table will facilitate the drawing-on of the ticking. To one end of each clamping memher, a cord or similar flexible device 17 is attached and when the ticking is drawn over the bat, as above explained, care should be exercised to insure the free ends of these cords being left accessible to the operator at the open end of the tick. The bat being now inserted within the tick, the operator can easily release the connecting devices 14 at respective ends of the clamping members, notwithstanding the fact that they will be inclosed within the ticking. The clamps having been released, the operator will with draw the upper clamping member 10 with the use of the cord attached thereto. The upper facing sheet 15 may also now be removed. The mattress will then be withdrawn from the table while the latter is in an inclined position (the inclination of the table from the latter) and then after the table has been lowered to a horizontal position, the mattress will be turned over and placed upon the same. The clamping member 11 which was under the end of the table before the mattress was withdrawn from the latter, is now upon the bat within the ticking and can be readily withdrawn with the use of the string or cord attached thereto. 4 After the removal of this clamping member the other facilitating such withdrawal of the mattress facing sheet can be withdrawn. To complete the mattress, it only remains to close the open end thereof by stitching in the usual manner. The connectors 14 hereinbefore referred to each comprises two end members 1819 and an intermediate flexible member 20. The flexible member 20 may consist of twine or other suitable material by means of which the members of the clamp can be drawn towards each other for securely clamping the bat to the table, and then fastened by tying or in any other suitable manner.
My improved machine can be manufactured and sold to dealers at a small cost and as it can be manipulated by the dealers and local mattress makers, the bats can be soldon the market as such and inserted into the ticking by such local dealers or mattress makers without danger of injury to the bat.
I-Iaving fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is,
1. A mattress making machine comprising a table free at one end, means for-clamping one end of a bat to the free end of the table, and means for withdrawing the clamping means after a ticking has been placed over and made to inclose the table, the bat and the clamp which secures the bat to the table.
2. A mattress making machine comprising a table free at one end, a clamp comprising two members removably connected together at their ends, for securing one end of a bat to the free end of the table, and means for separately withdrawing the respective members of the clamp after the clamp, the
table and the bat shall have been inclosed within a ticking.
3. A mattress making machine comprising a table free at one end, a clamp comprising two members removably connected together at their ends for clamping one end of a bat to the clamp, the table and the free end of the table, and a cord attached to each member of the clamp for withdrawing the latter after the bat shall have been inclosed in a ticking.
4. The combination with a table free at one end, of a clamp for securing one end of a bat to the free end of the table, said clamp comprising two members, one to be disposed under the table and the other over the bat, and flexible connectors at the ends of the clamping members, and a cord attached to each clamping member for withdrawing the same after the clamp, the table and the bat shall have been inclosed within a ticking.
5. In a mattress making machine, the combination with a frame and means for hinging said frame to a support, whereby the frame can be tilted, of a table secured at one end over the frame and free at the other end, a clamp comprising two members removably connected together at their ends for clamping one end of a bat to the free end of the table, and means for separately withdrawing the respective members of the clamp after the clamp, the table and the bat shall have been inclosed within the ticking.
6. In a mattress making machine, the combination with a frame having an elevated portion at one end and means for hinging said frame at a point between its ends to a support, of a table secured at one end to the elevated portion of the frame and free at its other end, a hinged prop for supporting said frame and table in an inclined position, .a clamp for securing one end of a bat to the free end of the able, said clamp comprising two members removably connected together, and means for withdrawing the respective members of the clamp after the clamp, the table and the bat shall have been inclosed within a ticking.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DANIEL HAYNES.
