SOW-BOX' OF SIZING OR SLASHING MACHINES.

To all whom it "may concern:
Be it known that we, Jnnns RUSIITON, JOSEPH LYTHGOE HOPPER, and JOHN HENRY HARDAGRE, subjects of the King of Great Britain, residing at Nelson, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to the Sow-Boxes of Sizing or Slashing Machines, Applicable also to other Purposes, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention has reference more particularly to sow-boxes of sizing or slashing machines, but is also applicable to other purposes, such as where substances are precipitated from their solutions.
It is a matter of considerable importance that the size in the sow-box of a sizing or slashing machine should be properly boiled or cooked, and that there should be uniformity in its application to the yarn. At present, the sow-box is usually divided into two compartments, one larger than the other by means of a partition, which crosses the box. A small passage or space is left near the bottom of the box, so that the size, as it is fed into the box, passes through the first compartment, in which there is a perforated steam pipe for boiling the size, then through a small passage or space at the bottom of the partition into the larger compartment containing the immersion, sizing and pressure rollers, and in which there is also a perforated steam pipe for boiling purposes. The object of this indirect feeding of the size into the trough is to enable the size to be properly boiled, and in fit condition for sizing the yarn. This object is, however, only inefficiently attained, for the raw size entering the box, by reasonof its greater specific gravity, falls to the bottom, and immediately makes its way through the said passage into The size is thus, not strictly speaking, throughout its entire bulk, of the same specific density or consistency, the result being that the warp especially in the case of heavy sizing receives more of its share in some parts and less in others.

by means of nails, screws, rivets, bolts, or the like two metal plates, preferably of copper. One of these plates is fixed against the division wall so as to cover the square hole on one side and the other on the other side. Prior to the plates being fixed to the trough, we cut a horizontal slot in the top of the plate, which is fixed on one side, and a similar slot in the plate, which is placed against the hole inthe division wall on the opposite side of the sow-box, but close to the bottom instead of at the top of the plate. The size, before leaving one compartment and entering the other, is thus caused to rise to a certain level determined by the height of the slot in the plate, then has to pass down the passage or space between the two plates, before it finally emer es through the slot close to the bottom of tie second )latc, and enters the other compartment. 11 some instances, the box may be suitably constructed on these lines without the use of the metal plates.
In the application of our invention to other purposes, such as where substances are precipitated from their solutions, which would probably have a deleterious effect upon them, the plates, instead of being made of metal may be made of other suitable material, such as ebonite, celluloid, etc., and may be fixed by any approved method, or the box and division wall may be made wholly of such material, or of glass or stoneware etc.
Our invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 a perspective view of a sow-box of a sizing or slashing machine having its division wall constructed in accordance therewith.
A is the sow-box, which is divided into two compartments B C by the partition D, but in lieu of the size being allowed to pass direct into one compartment from the other, through a small opening at the bottom of the trough as usual, we so construct the division wall of the trough by the formation of a Vertical passage and an upper and lower slot on each side thereof respectively, as to cause the size to ascend to any required height and then descend through the said internal passage in the division wall, ere it will be permitted to pass into the adjacent compartment. For this purpose, we cut in the partition D, a large square or rectangular hole, and fix on eaeh'side of such hole two plates,
preferably of copper E G. The plate E, which is fixed at the side of the partition or division wall in the smaller compartment, has a horizontal slot F cut in it near its top edge, and the plate G, which is fixed to the face of the division wall in the larger compartment, has a similar slot H formed in it, but in this case, the slot is at or near the bottom of thetrough. The size, which enters from the back, thus rises to the height of the slot in the small compartment, and passes down passage J between the adjacent plates, before it can emerge through the opening H at the bottom. This insures the size being properly boiled and in excellent condition for imparting to the yarn, as it is passing around the usual immersion and sizing rollers.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of our said invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, we declare that what we claim is 1. A sow box for sizing and slashing machines, comprising a receptacle, a transverse vertical partition dividing the receptacleinto a boiling chamber for the sizing, and a compartment for the immersion rollers, the partition being provided with a vertical passage having an inlet at its upper end communicating with the upper portion of the boiling chamber and adapted to. receive sizing from the upper portion of the latter in a boiling condition, the said passage having an outlet at its lower end for discharging the boiling sizing from said chamber into the roller compartment.
2. A sow box for sizing, and slashing machines comprising a receptacle, a transverse vertical partition having an enlarged opening therein, the partition dividing the receptacle into a boiling chamber for the sizing, and a compartment for the immersion rollers, and a pair of plates composed of non-corrosive material secured to the opposite sides of said partition and covering the opening therein, the plate within the boiling chamber having a slot in its upper portion to receive the boiling sizing from the upper portion of said chamber, and the plate within the roller compartment having a slot in its lower portion through which the sizing from the boiling chamber is discharged, the opening in the compartment serving as a vertical connecting passage between the upper and lower slots in the said plates.
