Description

PATENTED MAR. 3, 1908.
B. WHITTAKER.
PIPE WRENCH. APPLICATION FILED JAN.'19. 1907. RENEWED JAN. 17', 1908.
IKE-human Gfwm M Ma & E 8141mm 0 BENJAMIN WHITTAKER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PIPE-WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
latented March 3, 1908.
Application filed January 19. 1907. Serial No. 353.052- Renewed January 17. 1903- Serial No. 411-326- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN WHITTAKER, a citizen of. the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piperenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to pipe wrenches in which a chain is employed in connection with a serrated head to grip the pipe.
The invention is adapted to wrenches hitherto devised and in use, and is also enibodied in new constructive details as hereinafter set forth.
The invention consists in the combination with a wrench of the class referred to in which serrated and bifurcated jaws form the fixed head of the wrench and between the bifurcated jaws a chain is passed that embraces the pipe, of a gripping block that may be secured between the jaws or rendered adjustable therewith to adapt the wrench for use upon beaded or flanged pipe fittings.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, a wrench is illustrated of the type referred to and with which the present invention is incorporated.
In the several figures the same numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section. Fig. 2 a face or front view. Fig. 3 an end view of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 a side view of the serrated head and removable block rendered adjustable therewith. Fig. 5 a similar view showing another means of adjusting the block. Fig. 6 an end view of Fig. 5; and Figs. 7 and 8 views of the block detached as designed for use, respectively, with the construction shown in Figs. 7 and 8.
As shown in Fig. 1, 9 represents the handle or bar; 10 the serrated jaws forming the head and fixed upon opposite sides of the bar 9; 11 is the chain pivoted to the bar and arranged to embrace the pipe or coupling 12 and passed between the jaws of the head with its free end connected with the bar in the usual way. In this figure, the wrench is shown as applied to a section of a beaded coupling, the bead or flange of the coupling being represented at 13 in dotted line.
14 is a block or auxiliary jaw which is arranged between the bifurcated and fixed jaws of the wrench and is also provided with a similar serrated face. This block 14 is made separate and adapted to be applied to wrenches of the type shown hitherto devised and in use and is also adapted for adjustment relative with the serrated face of the fixed head of the wrench to form a gripping surface fiush with the gripping surface of the head or depressed to grip the bead or flange of a coupling coincident with the gripping surface of the head as shown in Fig. 1. Any suitable means may be used for securing the block within the jaws of the wrench and any suitable devices may also be employed to adjust the block relatively with the fixed jaws without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the present instance, difierent means are shown for adjusting the block, Fig. 1 showing the block adapted to slide in a guide way 15 in one of the jaws and provided with a slot 16 that engages a stud and nut 17 by which it is secured at a desired point.
In Fig. 5 an alternative means of adjusting the block is shown consisting in a threaded stem 18 extending from the end of the handle bar 9 and in line therewith, whereby a vertical adjustment of the block effects the same relative position of it with the operating face of the head. This adjustment is effected by turning the stem 18 by means of the slot at its end as shown at 19, Fig. 6, which causes the block 14 to move up or down and vary the distance of its serrated {lace with respect to the serrated face of the ead.
In the construction of the block 14 and its attachment to the wrench, I wish it understood that the block may be secured in place by any suitable means and with or without an adjusting device as I do not wish to confine or limit the invention to such details of construction.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. A wrench comprising in combination, an operating handle, a bifurcated holding head having serrated jaws, a connected clamping chain cooperating with said head to grip a pipe or other article, and a separable gripping block interposed between the jaws adapted to engage with a beaded or projecting portion of the pipe or pipe fittings, or other article.
2. A wrench comprising in combination, an operating handle, a bifurcated holding head having serrated jaws, a connected clamping chain cooperating with said head to grip a pipe or other article, a gripping Iii testimen'y' whereof I afliX my signature block interpofiedbbeltlwgen the jaws adapted in presence of two Witnesses.
to en a eWit a ea e orprojeeting portion 7 of th% gipe or pipe fittings, or other article, I BENJAMIN WHITTAKER' 5 and .means for adjusting said block relatively with the gripping surface of the holding head.
