UNITED STATES PATENT or-rron EDWARD D. SCHMITT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO MONABOH SEAL COMPANY, OFNEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
MACHINE FOR APPLYING BOTTLE-SEALS- Specification of Letters Patent.
Batented Feb. 25, 1908.
Application filed May 1907. Serial No- 3734176- a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State pf New York, have invented certain new and Useful Improvements inMachines for Apply- Bott le-Seals, of which. the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates to machines for applying bottle caps and particularly to a means for ap lying and locking hard metal ca 's to a bott e or like vessel, having an annu ar locking shoulder or surface adjacent to its mouth, into engagement with which the flange of the cap is forced.
The invention relates more particularly 'to the construction of the sealing head,
which it will appear to those skilled in the art, may be employed in machines of this character, regardless of any special means for lowering the head or raising the bottle seat, it being immaterial to my invention which of the parts is moved, so long as there'is a movement of one of the partsor both of the parts to get the desired and required sealing pressure. I have shown the head mounted on a frame of ordinary construction in which the head is depressed toward the bottle seat, and
- returned to normal position b a s rin or 1n the machine or in the means for raising and lowering the head, these parts will not be described in detail, save in so far as it is desirable to show a means for moving the head.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine; Fig. 2 is a central section of the head with a bottle ea in dotted lines in the'sealholding cavity of t e plunger; Fig. 3 is a similar view the parts of the mechanismof the head being in about the position they occu y or assume at the moment the flange of the cap is locked into holding engagement with the locking surface or shoulder of the bottle, the upper portion of a bottle with a cap thereon being shown in section; Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of the plunger taken about on line a-a, Fig. 2 Fig. 5 1s a cross section taken about on line b?) Fig. 2, showing the s ring-backed pins for temporarily holding t e bottle cap in the plunger pre aratory to the sealing operation.
eferring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the machine frame, having ato normal position by a suitable spring 9, as
is usual in machinesof this character. The casing 10 is formed with a lower-cylindrical portion 11 and a reduced up er portion 1.2, the lower ortion being provi ed with a bore 13, and t e upper portion with a reduced bore 14.
The plunger is designated by the numeral 15. It is made with a number of radial recesses 16 cut in from its eri hery in which are arranged pivoted sea loc ing levers17, preferably six in number. These leversare each provided with short inwardly extending indenting points 18, which are simultaneously projected into the seal holding cavity 18 of the plunger to pinch the flange of the cap at intervals under the shoulder on the bottle, when the sealing pressure has been a plied and the seal seated. Intersecting t ese recesses 16 area corresponding number of radially arranged a ertures 19, that pass from the periphery of t e lunger to the central opening 20 therein. T e upper arms of the seallocking levers extend into the recesses 19, where their inner faces are enga ed by springs 21, whose inner ends are seate in cups 22, formed with rounding or cam surfaces 23, which are engaged by the bevel or cam surface 24 of a rod 25. This rod is held fast at its upper end within a screw cap 26, and has no vertical movement in the operation of the head parts, although as will a pear later, the rod-may be adjusted vertica ly to vary the point at which its bevel willengage the cu s 22. The connection betweenthe rod an cap is a threaded one, whereby said rod may be adjusted up or down to vary the point at which thecam surface 24 thereon will engage the rounded ends or cam surfaces 23 of the caps 22. The adjustment is maintained by means. of a lock nut 27, provided .with spanner holes 28 by which it may be conveniently turned on the threaded portion \29 of the rod. Interposed between the nut 27 and the u per edge of a reduced extension 30 of the pl imger is the sealing spring 31-,
ing head as especially ada connected to the casing by threads 34 and obviouslyreadily removable when it is desired to have access to the plunger arts, the
= annular locking surface'or shoulder adjacent -to their mouths, it willbe understood that" the heads would be equally adapted for applying caps or covers to vessels other than ottles, such as glass jars, cans, 'etc.,'it being obviously only necessary to vary the dimensealing head non-rotata Y yielding seal applying plunger in said head sions of the head art to accommodate them to such additiona uses.
Claims. v 1
1. In a machine for a lying bottle seals-,.a
ie on its own axisa' and having.- a plurality of recesses therein, a seal locking lever rockably mounted in each recess, a stationary cam element, slidable .devices carried by the plun er adapted toengage the station'ary cam e ement tor the purpose set forth, and a yielding means .mter.
posed between saidslidable devices and the seal locking levers abovetheir pivotal points, whereby upon the upward movement of the plunger the leverswill be rocked to lock the:
, seal.
sealing head non-rotata vided with recesses, sea ice 2. a machine for a lying bottle seals, a sealing, head non-rotated) e on its own axis, a yielding seal a plying plunger in said head and having a p urality of'recesses therein, a seal locking lever rockably mounted in eacl recess, slidable devices'carried by the plunger and provided at their inner ends with cam surfaces, yielding means interposed between said devices and the rockable seal locking levers, an adjustable cam' element for operating the slidable devices, whereby the point at which in the movement of theplunger, a seal may be locked, is varied. 3, In a machine for ap) yielding seal applying ,plun er. in said head, said plunger having a sea holdin cavity therein, and means for temporarily ho ding the seal in said cavity, said lun er being also pro- Eing levers ivotallymounted in said recesses and forme with indenting points at their lower ends, a station- My c'am element, slidable devices mounted in the plunger and having cam surfaces adapted to en'gagethe cam element, yielding means interposedbetween said slidable devices in the up er ends of the seal locking levers, throu which, when said devices engage the cam e ement, the-lower ends of the locking levers are rocked into the seal cavity to indent the flange ofthe seal into locking enga ementwit the bottle.
