Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDMOND WV. JETER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Grate Attachment, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in grate attachments.

The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of grate attachments, and to provide a simple, inexpensive and eflicient device of this character of great strength and durability, designed for heating sad irons, cooking, etc., and adapted to be either hung in front of the grate, or supported at the top thereof.

A further object of the invention is to provide a grate attachment, having adjustable means for engaging a grate, whereby it is adapted to be applied to grates of various shapes and sizes.

Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may beresorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the drawings :Figure 1 is an end elevation of a grate attachment, constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to a grate, the latter being in section. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing another position of the grate attachment. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the grate attachment. Fig. 4 is a similar view, the grate attachment being inverted to illustrate the clamping devices more clearly.

Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

1 designates a plate or shelf, adapted to be arranged in front of the grate at a point below the top of the same, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, or it may be arranged at the top of the grate, as shown in Fig. 2. The shelf, which may be constructed of sheet metal, or other suitable material, is

hung from the top of the grate by means of upwardly extending supporting arms 2,

formed integral with transverse bars or members 3 and having their upper ends bent into terminal hooks 4 for engaging the top of the grate. By this construction the device is adapted to be readily hung on a grate at the front thereof, and it may be quickly removed from the same when desired.

The bars or members 3, which may be constructed of any suitable material, extend across the lower face of the plate or shelf near the ends thereof, and are centrally pivoted to the same by rivets 5, or other suitable fastening devices, and the said bars or members 3 are provided at the side of the grate opposite that which the arms are located with depending jaws 6, adapted to engage the inner face of the grate at the top thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The ends of the transverse bars or members are bent downwardly at right angles to form the depending clamping jaws, and the pivots 5 permit the bars or members to be oscillated to engage the jaws with a grate.

When the plate or shelf is arranged at the top of the grate, as shown in Fig. 2, the outer face of the grate is engaged by an intermedi-' ate clamping jaw 7, which is substantially L-shaped, consisting of a horizontal top por tion and a depending vertical portion. The top portion is pivoted to the lower face of the shelf or plate by a rivet 8, or other suitable fastening device, located adjacent to one edge of the plate or shelf, and adapted to permit the engaging portion of the jaw to be turned to either the inner or outer side of the pivot to adapt the jaws to grates of different sizes. Also the side jaws 6 are adapted tobe moved inwardly or outwardly by swinging the bars or members, which constitute levers and are adapted to be operated by the arms 2 in applying the device to the top of the rate. By pivotally mounting the jaws, the fatter are adapted to engage either a curved or straight grate as well as grates of different sizes.

The grate attachment while being designed particularly for heating sad irons will be found advantageous for cooking and other heating pur oses.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A grate attachment comprising a plate or shelf, bars or members extending across the plate or shelf and pivotally connected with the same and rovided at one side of the said plate or shelf with upwardly extending supporting arms and having depending jaws located at the opposite side of the plate or shelf, and an intermediate jaw mounted on the plate or shelf and cooperating with the said jaws.

2. A grate attachment comprising a plate or shelf, bars or members pivoted to the plate or shelf and provided at one side thereof with supporting arms and having jaws at the opposite side of the plate or shelf, and a pivoted reversible intermediate jaw mounted on the plate or shelf and cooperating with the said jaws.

3. A grate attachment comprising a plate or shelf, spaced clamping bars or members pivoted to the lower face of the late or shelf and bent upwardly at one side of the same to form supportin arms, said bars being also bent downward y at the opposite side of the plate or shelf to form depending jaws, and a substantially L-shaped jaw secured to the late or shelf and arranged between the said bars or members and cooperating with the jaws thereof.
