Description

No. 887,016. 7 PATENTED MAY 5, 1908. C. POLAND. y
I CONSTRUCTION OF DRUMS.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 30,1907.
v illustrated by way of example in the accommanager, a subject of the King of Bavaria,
ing hoop with drum head before and after CHRISTIAN POLAND, or newer, GER ANY.
oons'muc'rxon 01: names.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application flied September 30, 1907. Serial No. 395,195.
Patented May 5, 1903.
To altwhoin it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN POLAND,
residing at Erfurt, Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in or Relating to the Construction of Drums, of which the following is as ecification.
In all iitherto known methods of securing the skin or skin substitute, hereinafter called the drum head, on the stretching hoops for drums, tambourines, and the like, it is, necessary to have, in addition to the str'etcl1 ing hoo proper,an auxiliary hoo or ring made 0 wood, cardboard or the li e to secure the drum head to the stretch-ing hoop, the said auxiliary hoo being placed between the turned over ange's of thestretching hoo According to this invention the'use 0 such auxiliary hoop or ring becomes unnecessary, and the stretching hoop is thus rendered lighter, of better appearance and chea er.
According to t is invention the drum head provided with a vertically turned over flange or edge, is inserted in an exact fitting manner into the edge of the stretching hoop in such manner, that the outside edge of the flange is approximately, flush with one edge of the stretching hoop, and then the said edge of the stretching hoop, together with the flange of the drum bottom, is tightly rolled inwards. V
A construction of a drum provided with a drum head secured in such manner, is
panying drawing which also shows a preliminary stage of the rocess;
Figure 1 is a si e elevation of the drum partlyin section. Fig. 2 is a plan partlyin section, and Figs. 3' and'4 show the stretchthe roll ng. i I
The drum head a made of sheet metal, celluloid or the like, is rovided at the edge I with a vertical flange 1) ig. 3) and is inserted with the said flange into the part c of the stretching hoop d, in such manner that the outer edge of the flange coincides'with the celluloid or the'like,it ,is sufiicient to roll;-i't inwards tightly only once, but if skin be; used; the rolling'in.will be suitablyeffecteda to form beads, as clearly shown;
If the drum head consists of she'et inetal,
so that the skin shou'ldbe heldperfectly I curely between the rolled up sheet metal; walls of the stretching'hoo'p The'hoo s11;
havetheir outer edges bent inwardly ledf I I,
andsaid hoops are, applied over op o te" of the drum body 6 and connects well known manner by stretchin the drum head a being atthesame ti i e stretched." c
What I claim"is: i
1. The combination ofadrumbody, 'lieads having flanges, stretchingh oop's having edges '7 0 engaging the flanges .of-the heads, the edges of the stretching hoo s and the flanges ofthe heads being interlofc ed by} rolling them to-Q 1gether, and stretching means engagingthe' 2. The combination 'With'Qa drum body, of 1 heads having flanges, stretchin ing inner portions en aging the l ianges of the heads, the flanges of t 1e heads and inner portions of the hoops bein rolled to fo'rm'interlocking means with re atiorrto each other, and stretching devices engaging the outer I portions of the hoops. v I
3. The combinationwith. a drum body, of I heads applied to. the bod stretching hoops having inner extremities ocked to the heads by rolling the engaging portions of the hoops and heads, and stretching means'engaging the outer portions of the hoops and adjusta: 1 '1 able to regulate the tension oi'the heads.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHRISTIAN POLAND.
Witnesses:
Fnrrz SonNELL, ERNST EBERHARDT.
