WITNESSES A TTORNEVS 1n: mmms PETERS 120., wasmuamu, a. c
, York, England, have mvented certain new each of the views, and in which ALEXANDER ROBERT BELL, OF SCARBOROUGH, ENGLAND.
CLOSURE DEVICE FOR JARS, BOTTLES, AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 21, 1908.
Application filed July 26, 1907. Serial No. 385,646.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER ROBERT BELL, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and residing at Scarborough, in the county of and useful Improvements in Closure Devices for Jars, Bottles, and the Like, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to closure devices for fruit jars, bottles and other vessels of thisclass, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation, and by means of which a vessel of the class specified may be securely sealed and conveniently opened at any time without the use or aid of an instrument of any kind or class.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in Figure 1 is a side view of an ordinary glass, can or ar provided with my improved closure device, Fig. 2 a view at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the jar and cap partly in section.
In the drawing forming part of this specification, I have shown at a an ordinary glass jar such as is commonly employed in canning or preserving fruit, and said jar is provided with a neck a having an enlarged top portion a provided at its opposite sides with lugs b. I also provide a cap 0 composed of material similar to that of the jar or can, andsaid cap is provided with a depending circular flange or rim member 0 adapted to fit within the enlarged top portion a of the jar, and the cap 0 is provided at opposite sides with projecting lugs d similar to the lugs l) in the opposite sides of the top portion (1 of the jar or can. I also provide a bail e the side portions of which, adjacent to their ends, are bent to form loops 6 and then to form hooks e as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing, and the ends of the hooks e are curved outwardly or away from the loops e as shown at e.
In practice I placea packing gasketf of rubber or any other suitable compressible material between the flange or rim 0 and the top of the neck of the bottle, and whenever it 1s I desired to close the vessel the gasket f is passed on over the depending rim or flange c of the cap 0 and the said cap is placed in position on the top of the vessel and the bail e which is composed of strong spring wire or a spring rod is manipulated so as to pass the lugs d of the cap 0 through the loops 0 and said bail is turned down into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and in this operation the hooks e of the bail c engage the lugs l) on the opposite sides of the neck of the vessel, and the cap 0 is drawn forcibly down into the closed position and the gasket f is compressed so as to form a perfectly tight seal for said vessel.
In order to open the vessel all that is necessary is to turn the bail e into the position shown in Fig. 3, and in this operation the hooks e are disengaged from the lugs 12 and the cap 0 may be removed by hand.
Although I have shown or described a jar or vessel composed of glass it will be apparent that the said ar or vessel may be composed of any desired material, and my said closure device may be applied to bottles, jugs, jars 01' any other vessel of this class.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A ar or other vessel, the top of which is provided at opposite sides with projecting lugs, a cap having corresponding lugs, and a bail the side portions of which are bent to form loops adapted to engage the lugs on the cap and to form hooks adapted to engage the lugs at the top of the vessel, substantially as shown and described.
2. A ar or other vessel, the top of which is provided at opposite sides with projecting lugs, a cap having corresponding lugs, and a bail the side portions of which are bent to form loops adapted to engage the lugs on the cap and to form hooks adapted to engage the. lugs at the top of the vessel, said cap being provided .with 2. depending member adapted to enter the top of the vessel and a packing gasket placed between the cap and the top of said vessel.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 12 day of July 1907.
ALEXANDER ROBERT BELL.
