TROLLEY.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, LOUIS O. W. MITCHELL and JOHN A. FRETZ, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Trolleys, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a new and useful improvement in trolleys, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly sim le and effective construction by which t ie trolley wheel will be caused to automatically assume the proper angle to follow the wire when turning curves and so adjust itself as to come into alinement with the wire when the curve is passed.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a trolley made in accordance with our improvement. Fig. 2, a broken away section showing the arrangement ofthe swivel connections between the pole and trolley harp. n carrying out our invention as here einbodied A represents the trolley pole, upon the upper end of which is mounted the base B, having formed therein the annular groove C for the reception of the coil springs D. This base also has formed therein the annular groove E for the reception of the balls F.
The harp designated G, has at its lower end a cap H, formed with a downwardly proj ecting annular skirt or flange having its under face grooved to register with the annular groove C. This flange terminates in an an nular depending rim portion which surrounds the edge portion of the base B, as a dust guard and also to more eHectively center the harp upon said base. The cap is held in place by the hollow stud I which is threaded into the base, having a head thereon for properly retaining the cap. The cap also has formed therewith the depending lugs J which project down into the groove O between the ends of the springs D, here shown as four in number, the opposite ends of lugs K projecting upward from the bottom of the groove O.
Hollow pole A, terminates at a point below the top portion of the bore of base B, to thereby enable the hollow stud I, to be threaded into the upper part of the bore of base B. As depicted in Fig. 2, stud I, has a hollow head which projects outwardly and by virtue of its engagement with the wall surrounding the opening provided for stud I,
1n cap H, retains the latter in relative position to base B. By this arrangement it will be seen that the springs D being under tension will normally hold ,the harp and wheel journaled therein in alinement with the pole, but when the trolley is traveling around a curve the harp will swing upon the base after the manner of a caster, thus following the- Wire without undue binding thereon, and as soon as the wheel has passed the curve it will automatically right itself, again coming into alinement with the pole. This is facilitated by the harp being set at an angle to the axis4 of the cap, as will be readily understood.
The base and stud have central openings therethrough for the passage of the wire for -conveying the current from the trolley to the car.
