JOSEPH A. RAMSEY, OF BEATRICE, NEBRASKA.
HUSKER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 7, 1907.
Patented April 14, 1908.
Serial No. 396,288.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known'that I, JosEPH A. RAMSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beatrice, in the county of Gage and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Husker, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to corn huskers.
The object of the invention is to provide a metallic thumb piece or stall including pivotally united sections one of which is provided with a plurality of shredding fingers or teeth adapted to pierce the husks and assist in removing the same from the ear.
A further object is to provide a thumb stall capable of being used in connection with an ordinary husking glove or mitt and which may be adjusted to fit the thumb of the operator.
A still further object of the invention is to generally im rove this class of devices so as to increase t eir utility, durability and efficiency.
Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a corn-husking device constructed in accordance with my invention showing the same in position on the thumb. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the Fig. 3 is a rear elevation.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
The improved husking implement forming the subject matter of the present invention comprises a pair of pivotally united sections 5 and 6 preferably formed of metal and adapted to be worn on the thumb, as best shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The section 5 consists of a ring split longitudinally,
as indicated at 7 so that the same may be adjusted to fit the thumb of the operator,
said ring or section being provided with oppositely disposed laterally extending ears 8 which bear against the exterior walls of the section 6 and are pivotally combined therewith by pins or studs 9 so as to permit free movement of the upper section during the husking operation. The section 6 is curved to conform to the shape of the thumb and is cut away at 10 to accommodate the knuckle or joint of the thumb so as to permit pivotal movement of the sections without danger of lacerating or otherwise injuring the thumb.
Extending laterally from the convex face of the section 6 are a plurality of shredding fingers or teeth 11 preferably formed by producing one or more slits or incisions in the metal and pressing the metal forming said fingers upwardly, as shown. The walls of the slots orincisions 12 are bent upwardly to form cutting edges 13 which assist in removing the husk from the ear of corn and also assist in preventing the openings 11 from becoming clogged or otherwise obstructed during the husking operation. One or more openings 14 are preferably formed in the convex face of the pivoted section 6, the metal surrounding the openings 14 being pressed upwardly to form cutting edges 15 similar in construction to the edges 12 and which bite into the husks and assist in removing fine particles of husks and silks from the ear.
As a means for retaining the husking implement in position on the thumb of the operator there is provided a strap or other flexible medium 17 which extends transversely across the open side of the section 6 and is secured thereto by hooks 18. The hooks 18 are struck up from the metal comprising the section 6 and are bent laterally into engagement with the straps 17, as indicated at 19, thereby to prevent accidental displacement of said strap.
The device is designed for use in connection with a husking glove or mitt and when so used is placed in position on the thumb with the shredding teeth or fingers projecting laterally and arranged in the path of movement of the ear of corn as the latter is drawn across the palm of the hand.
By forming the lower section or ring 5 with a longitudinal slot, said ring may be readily expanded or contracted so as to fit the thumb of the operator. It will also be observed that the thumb piece forms a shield or housing for the thumb so as to prevent injury to that member during the husking operation and means forretaining the husker in position on the thumb.
2. A corn husker comprising a thumb stall formed of a plurality of sections one of which is provided with laterally extending ears each having a pivotal connection With the mating section, said mating section being formed with a longitudinal row of laterally extending up-struck shredding fingers, hooks struck up from the body of one of the sections, and means extending transversely across said section and engaging the bills of the hooks.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
JOSEPH A. RAMSEY.
Witnesses:
